This ain't it, boss. The point of the comic is to treat women as people and that it's cool as hell to do so.

e: holy poo poo that Family Circus continues its downward spiral into spite and hating children.

It's weird how common missing children gags used to be, since IMO they are actually really bad taste.

Gunther seems more like an example of my argument than he does someone who would promote it. He's the most romantically successful character in Luann in spite of his total lack of redeeming qualities.

Snoopy getting that letter seems kind of tone deaf seeing as Hank Aaron got so many racist slur-filled letters when he broke the record. I'm not sure what the intent is but I guess the nicest interpretation was supposed to be Snoopy showing solidarity with him?

I would assume so - just a few years prior, Schulz had added the first African-American to the cast (Franklin) and ignored threats from Southern newspapers to drop his strip if he didn’t remove him, so it’s hard to believe that he had malicious intent. At worst, I think it was just Schulz commenting on what was a huge story at the time. Keep in mind that this isn’t a one-off - this story lasted for at least a couple of weeks.

The point is that the comic is telling men it's cool to respect women, not that respecting women is an automatic pass to getting laid. (and in fact, the comic is also pointing out that treating women as vending machines for sex is bad)

it's because she's intensified stodginess. everything in luann already has this patina of bland and pointless and she's supposed to be "the boring one" in that context

I didn't mention anything about getting laid and neither did the comic. It's obviously playing off these assumptions though as am I. I just don't like magical thinking when it comes to the belief that respecting women equals popularity with women although I completely agree that respecting women and not treating them as sex objects is indeed cool.

Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded. Centrism isn't change -- not even incremental change. It is *control*. Over yourself and the world. Exercise it.

Looks like about twenty years, which puts Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny as immediately contemporary with Smokey Stover.

One of the things I really appreciate about this thread is putting the early-20th century humor I saw in the early nineties into context. Looney Tunes were in pretty much constant TV rotation when I was a kid, but it's only now that I can see the legacy that they were building from.
