Oh no, slacking off. :jerkbag:

You know a friend of mine had to turn down a job offer because they changed the original job description, hours AND told him starting pay would be significantly less to start after going through bullshit testing and qualifications. And tho running the gently caress away is 100% the right thing to do he is still taking it bad.

This is coloring my read of Dustin strips, and whatever this loving right to work state rear end in a top hat is unhappy with it's absolutely bullshit.

Didn't these Foob reruns initially try to pretend they took place in the modern world by changing things like "Walkman," to "iPod" or something? I guess they gave up on that.

Surgeon's Tales

Karl XII had dethroned Augustus and given the Polish crown to Stanisław I. According to the book, Karl and Augustus pretended to be in good terms (they were cousins after all), but in truth, despised each other.

The book strongly criticize Karl XII for spending a way too much effort fighting Poland/Saxons and this ultimately gave Russia an opportunity to become a great power.

The last strip here was a bit tough to translate. The pun isn't super great in Finnish, but basically as follows:
vuoden työntekijä = employee of the month
työntekijä = employee (literally "doer of work")
siivoustyö = cleaning work
siivoustyöntekijä = "doer of cleaning work"
viikon siivoustyöntekijä = cleaner of the week

Vintage Valiant (Sep. 08, 1940)

Flavius Aetius was a Roman general who is most well remembered for defeating the Huns at the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields in 451 (here called the Battle of Chalons), and for being assassinated by Valentinian III who feared usurpation (his "undeserved doom"). He had a long and successful career, and is rewarded for that here by, I believe, being the first actual historical figure to appear in Prince Valiant, narrowly beating out Valentinian who will appear shortly. Attila the Hun, of course, was also a real person, but while he has been mentioned he died off panel without actually personally appearing in the strip. For those who are interested in dating the story, Aetius' upcoming death took place on September 21, 454, although of course Foster isn't really following a real world timeline.

Of course I respect a cartoonist's decision to end a strip after it has gone through all the visual puns the writer had in mind, but I can't help but think that Man in Black still would have had tons of "glass half full/empty" and elevator jokes to tell! :horse:

I hate how excited I am for the prospect of Batiuk killing two characters in a fire.

Also my first thought on seeing that panel with the reporter at the fire was “you are several miles too close.” If you have never seen footage of how fast a truly out of control wildfire like that can move, do yourself a favor and check it out.
I was a block away from a house fire - the entire house was on fire at this point and even a block away in my car with the air conditioner running I could feel the heat! I can't imagine how hot a forest fire would be!

This run was 1989-90, but the original text is Finnish and translated by me, so it doesn't really matter.

The original text uses a humorous portmanteau rather than a proper word:

Ihailija = fan/admirer
Viha = hate

Viha + ihailija = vihailija = hater

People talk a lot about drinking coffee in this comic. Finns are the biggest coffee drinkers in the world - 9.9 kilograms per person in 2019. The coffee bread here is a specific thing called pullapitko.

The Finnish row house, rivitalo, might look a bit different from its international counterparts. They are often one floor, fairly small and not particularly urban, found usually at the edges of cities and towns.
