People talk a lot about drinking coffee in this comic. Finns are the biggest coffee drinkers in the world - 9.9 kilograms per person in 2019. The coffee bread here is a specific thing called pullapitko.

The Finnish row house, rivitalo, might look a bit different from its international counterparts. They are often one floor, fairly small and not particularly urban, found usually at the edges of cities and towns.

Man that coffee bread sounds amazing right now (and also the concept of ever owning a home).

E: and now I’ve decided to try baking it. Here’s hoping cardamom is something they sell at the grocery store.

It's expensive, but if you're in the states you shouldn't have too much trouble finding powdered cardamom in the spice aisle at most grocery stores. Which is good, because I want to try making this too. :yum:

I was a block away from a house fire - the entire house was on fire at this point and even a block away in my car with the air conditioner running I could feel the heat! I can't imagine how hot a forest fire would be!

Unfortunately I couldn't find the video I really wanted to post, but this will have to do. It was taken during the Delta Fire in northern California a couple of years back. It occurred on a stretch of I-5 that I have to drive through on my commute to work and I can tell you that the area still looks like poo poo even now, two years later. It's not the northern California fire that was the closest or the scariest to me personally, nor was it the one that hurt or killed the most people, but it's the one whose destruction I still look at multiple days a week, so I'm going with it.

Be aware that the cinematography was done by two frightened truckers, so it's not the best. About four and a half minutes in is where you see the best example of how quickly a fire like this can go from no fire to oh, there's some fire over there, to OH HOLY loving poo poo WE MIGHT DIE. And I think the video as a whole shows the fear and the hopelessness that comes with being stuck on a road needing to evacuate RIGHT NOW and not being able to because everybody else is trying to get out, too. And this fire isn't even in a big city, it occurred out in the middle of the woods on a relatively quiet stretch of I-5.

All of this is to say that the notion of driving into a fire like this to go rescue somebody is asinine. Don't loving do it. DON'T. Because look at the mess those roads are. Stay the gently caress out of there. People are trying to get OUT so they don't DIE. Stay out of their way. Firefighters and other trained emergency services are trying to get in so they can help rescue people or fight the fire. Don't barge in and get under their feet or make yourself another victim that they then have to spend more time rescuing.

Wildfires are terrifying. And they are fast. So so fast. gently caress you, Batiuk, for just seeing it as a flashy way to build up some drama for your lovely strip. Real people die in these things. And you're acting like it's heroic to run in and become a liability. Just get hosed. And I hope you never experience the fear of a wilfire threatening you or your loved ones or your home town, or the grief that comes when the fire wins.

I remember this bit from the d&d thread. Specifically someone having to explain the translation is way off, it's not a half-marathon, it's a half-something-else that people only run in Sweden that would be much more reasonable for someone of Zelda's level of physical fitness. A bad translation.

I just want to note that this is the second time Coney has eaten a mythical creature; a couple months ago (in-strip) it was gnomes, now it's the tooth fairy. Of course, considering that we'll later find out that the Easter Bunny is real and is an actual rabbit (a squad of them, rather) going around hiding eggs, it's likely that the "gnomes" and the "fairy" were actual people just doing their jobs.
