I'm mostly familiar with the tv shows which would definitely tone poo poo down, but I gotta ask. Is Zorro the kind of guy who goes around actually severing throats? I always thought that with him the threat was always, "Ha ha. You have a Z on your butt. Now don't you feel like an rear end in a top hat in front of all your men and maybe your girlfriend?" I know that's still his first action in all incarnations, but in a tricky situation, will Zorro actively kill a guy?

It shouldn't be as surprising to me as it is, but I gotta say I'm disappointed that Old Mary Worth seems to be going with the "look at this bitch who clearly only cares about money and status" angle rather than the "this woman is sick and tired of being married to a man who never opens his mouth for any reason other than to belittle and demean her and his open and gleeful making GBS threads on her for wanting to buy her dream home now that they can afford it is the last straw."

Old Mary Worth (and Old A3G) tends to have the same problem that Luann and Dustin do, that the reader sympathizes and roots for characters that the writer did not intend and hates characters that the writer wants us to like. Modern readers, anyway.

I believe he followed a similar trajectory as Batman did, where the earliest stories had him kill if he needed but over time he gained a code that forbade it. I think there is an intertitle in the 1920 film that states he had killed but I forget if that is confirmed or just a rumor spread by the villains. At the very least, Zorro does threaten people with guns in the film.

A big problem with translating these is the characters' habit of addressing others and themselves with their official titles. Here, maisteri refers to teacher Manninen's Master's degree and specifically to that, so in Finnish it does not have the extra connotations of the word 'master'.

Trust me: people like this find a way to blame themselves.

Also, Fi asked Dethany for advice and asked her to keep it secret. Dethany talking about it with her boyfriend during the video call is a massive dick move towards Fi.

Dethany is a terrible, abusive friend who smiles as she finds new ways to gently caress Fi over. gently caress Holbrook for not thinking at all when writing her.

We have Izanagi and Hachiman as obvious references, but looking up Shammu brings up an Indian actress who was born 12 years after this story ran so I'm not sure what that's supposed to reference (I don't know nearly enough about Japanese history, unfortunately). Yamato, of course, is kinda like naming your British character "Briton."

I only have excellent ideas
It turns out that redesigning a syllabus for online teaching isn't as easy as I thought it would be, especially in the middle of also having to get certified for online teaching and recording a full month's worth of video lectures and things in case I get sick and am unable to explain Macbeth to asleep-style undergrads on my own anymore and working on dissertation revisions even more. So, anyway, back on the DtWOF wagon for now at least although commentary might be scant since I'm the least exhausted I've been in awhile tonight and I'm still fucken exhausted.

Dykes to Watch Out For #93 (1990)
-Alison Bechdel

This one feels really evergreen to me, not only because Mo flipping her poo poo over being called a liberal feels very timeless but because I think there's something almost universally legible to this sense of two people who should really have split up already just not willing to get to that point with themselves or each other. This feels like the build-up to a very final breakdown but believe it or not Mo and Harriet stay together for a good chunk of the comic after this-- but the sense we've already seen of their friends feeling shaky with the longevity of the relationship continues to build from here on out.

Edit: Full disclosure this one also always stings to me because I spent much of my young adult relationships and friendships being the Mo in this scenario and in hindsight I was abominable. I thought that being sure I was ideologically correct meant I could segue the urgency I felt about woeful current events into rudeness to people who didn't agree with me. Now I find it pretty easy to see Harriet's side of things-- she loves her girlfriend and you know, definitely does care about environmental and social justice, but she's being made out as the bad guy here for having less ethical rigor than Mo. It's a tense strip because honestly Bechdel has done such a good job of making both characters lovable and getting us as readers invested in their happiness. Seeing both of their personalities contribute to the fraying of that happiness is painful to see, which I think is the intent, mitigated a little by the vaudeville-esque narration. Bechdel is the best.

I don't know how I completely missed that (probably because it's been so long that now all the katakana and hiragana are mixed up in my head and I'm probably missing half of them). They swung, they hit, but it was a foul ball.

I thought maybe "Emperor Shammu" might be a reference to Jimmu, and I'm still not sure but the dude Yamato killed might be (and given the other names probably is) named after this dude.
