How To Read 9 Chickweed Lane 3. The "Last" Panel. ![]() TCC: Do you keep a notepad nearby for ideas? BM: If not a notepad, I reach out for envelopes, napkins, a stick scrawled in the sand, blood if handy. (From a 2017 interview with The Celebrity Cafe) A. Context The final panel is the place where it all pays off. In serialized strips, it points the way to a new adventure, presents a cliff for you to hang from, or finds a pleasing stopping point while we wait for the next adventure. In humor strips of the multipanel variety, the final panel is what Ernie Bushmiller called "the snapper", the Borscht Belt rimshot from the drummer, the comedic payoff that thanks you for showing up at the comic strip today, and remember to tip your wait staff. Infrequently, it signals a thoughtful release, a gentle exhale. Brooke McEldowney has proven he can think in those terms, but it certainly doesn't show up in all of his work, as demonstrated by today's example. B. Text "Last" panel is in irony quotes, since the first panel was the entire point of today's excursion. Dedicating half of his real estate to the bullet holes indicates that he was quite pleased with the idea, but a satisfactory payoff obviously wasn't factored into the game plan, leaving the two characters at a loss to wrap this poo poo up. With so little on the page, you begin wondering what extra tag it would take to justify hanging even a woefully deluded Mission: Accomplished banner on this strip. Since this scene takes place in the now-traditional featureless void, the choose-your-own-adventure possibilities are wide-ranging. "The Van Hoesens are going to ask what happened to their garage." "You misspelled 'handsome' on the first three attempts." "Hope that man was dead before you started." Instead, the comedic potential is allowed to sputter out, like a wet fart. Since the dialogue just lies there, the facial expressions (or rather "expression" in singular, as Thorax is typically unreadable) have to carry the weight here. Robbed of the power of her authority, and with the promise of hot, sweaty Thorax love within her reach, the formerly authoritarian Sgt. Meadow is as eager to please as a puppy. The transformation suggests a new hashtag, but All Cops Need To Get Laid is deeply awkward. Maybe it needs more vowels. Moral: If your format of expression has an endgame, you need to factor in an end to your game. (The other strips are coming, I promise...) Yeah, PO box company is a Finnish name for a shell company, I just forgot the English term. Juniper ball is what it says on the tin, just a ball made of juniper, a tchotchke. Think Simpsons and Marge's necklace, made of juniper. The Finnish word used, kuula, is more evocative of this but I felt other English substitutes have bit too specific meanings

I hate everything about this. The whole thing could be easily solved if he just stopped with the weird passive-aggression and just talked to his girlfriend. I know that this is supposed to be evoking how teenagers are dumbasses, but when you factor in Lynn's ideas about other women, it feels like she's putting all the blame on Martha for being the wrong girl for her son. Green Intern posted:I thought Martha sent Michael a letter or a phone call at the start of this farm arc in FOOB. Am I misremembering? No, Michael sent her a letter talking about farm life and asking Martha to not tell anything to his abusive mom, but didn't get a reply. The most Lynn Johnston Move I can think of is that Martha gave her letters to Lynn so she can forward it to Michael, but Lynn conveniently "forgot" to do so. For a second, I thought that was supposed to be a top hat covering the fact that Arlo's still got a boner and good to go for another round.
