How Wonderful!

I only have excellent ideas
Ruthless Rhymes for Martial Militants (4/14/1913)

The last two lines of this poem are borrowed liberally from several earlier "Little Willie" poems.

From Dean Hole's 1895 A Little Tour of America:

quote:

Susan poisoned her grandmother’s tea;
Grandmamma died in agonee.
Susan’s papa was greatly vexed,
And he said to Susan: “My dear, what next?”

From Newton Mackintosh' 1896 A Chamber of Horrors With Profane Passages:

quote:

Willie poisoned his father’s tea;
Father died in agony.
Mother came, and looked quite vexed:
“Really, Will,” she said, “what next?!”[quote]

and from 1911's anonymous Little Willies
[quote]
Willie poisoned Auntie’s tea,
Auntie died in agony.
Uncle came and looked quite vexed,
“Really, Will,” said he, “what next?”

As you can see originality was not really the point of this genre. I wonder if Harding's decision to swap "agony" out for "peacefully" is a little revealing, a distaste for showing an authority figure in the throes of pain.

King George V, Queen Victoria's grandson and the guy who renamed the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha to the less aggressively Germanic House of Windsor in the midst of WWI, was crowned in 1910 and ruled until his death in 1936. I'm not an expert on this but a brief look around didn't turn up any major plots to poison him but he did reign during a huge tumult of new social and political movements, many of which were happy to position the awkward and stern monarch as the face of reactionary and ossified "old ways" in contrast to the new possibilities presented by the 20th century.

I just looked at it again, and he's supposed to be naked but the colorist dipped him in paint

This is actually far less weird than how it originally seemed given the context of the strip

Mämmilä

At this point Mämmilä moved to a new magazine, Kuukausiliite, and it was published as a two-pager. That means there will be a lot of these where one comic continues straight from the previous one. Later it returned to it's old format because the workload was too much; according to Koivisto, originally a single page took about 27 hours but later even a full week was barely enough.

I'd rather continue posting them one at a time (because I'm lazy), but there will be a few doubles because they were clearly made as a single spread.

e. Finland tax data is publicly available and the papers love to publish celebrity salaries. Based on those, our popular cartoonists seem to earn about 50-100 thousand euros/year (before taxes).

The first strip uses the term "tittelinkipeä"; it means something like "hungry for a title" but the literal translation is "title-sick", to which the gagging in the last panel refers. I decided to just leave this wordplay out entirely because I couldn't figure out how to translate it. Also, I've never heard of the term "careerist" but my dictionary claims it refers to someone furthering their career while disregarding other things.

How To Read 9 Chickweed Lane

13. Edda. (preliminary notes)

A. Subtext.

Some characters are hard to sum up because their outlines are left intentionally vague. Edda Burber Van Hoesen is tricky because the details are a little too extra.

Edda, the second character who gets a line in the first 9CL, is a ballerina, classical pianist, very briefly a fashion model, and (checks notes)...well this can't be right. It says here she's a mother of two. Hmm, I'll have to take their word for it.

She was the disruptive one in school, the enlivening influence, but also kind of an overachiever. As if pianist/ballerina/fashion model wasn't a big enough hint, her comic book fantasy alter ego was drawn on a proper drafting table.

We've been led to believe that she's dazzlingly excellent at all of these, but you'd think at least one of these disciplines would suffer from an overcrowded practice schedule. If there was a week where she collapsed from exhaustion after years of overextending herself, I haven't run across it yet.

In spite of all that, she's also the one who at times gets dangerously close to sounding like an actual human being (see: yesterday's offering of the traditional comic strip "knuckle sandwich" to her future husband). It's a tendency that waxes and wanes, and she seems to have grown out of it. But there are hints as to how she might be a good entry point...if you came into the continuity at the right time.

Then Brooke had to screw it up by shoehorning in that flashback sequence where seven year-old Edda is a shrunken, overly-wordy adult giving her mother sex advice. Forget your memories, the strip tells us. She was always insufferable, as were they all.

B. Text.

Meanwhile, back in the present day: oh great, a whole week about teenage Edda's underwear.

So yes, yesterday wasn't a false alarm, we have a wardrobe emergency and her lifelong companion is on the case. You'd think her expression would register as a little more squicked out by Amos's reverential attention to her drawers than just the pop-eyed suspicion we get here, but I dunno, maybe we're supposed to believe that's what she's into.

Moral: In character as in dialogue, sometimes too much is more damaging than not enough.
