Well, we need to start working towards that, today. Revolution doesn't happen overnight.

And it's not going to happen by asking people " Please be decent people and do the right things".
There is gonna be violence, blood, pain and death.

RE Howard, The Tower of the Elephant posted:

He thought of Yara, the high priest, who worked strange dooms from the jeweled tower, and the Cimmerian's hair prickled as he remembered a tale told by a drunken page of the court - how Yara had laughed in the face of a hostile prince, and held up a glowing, evil gem before him, and how rays shot blindingly from that unholy jewel, to envelop the prince, who screamed and fell down, and shrank to a withered blackened lump that changed to a black spider which scampered wildly about the chamber until Yara set his heel upon it.

Yara came not often from his tower of magic, and always to work evil on some man or some nation. The king of Zamora feared him more than he feared death, and kept himself drunk all the time because that fear was more than he could endure sober. Yara was old - centuries old, men said, and added that he would live for ever because of the magic of his gem, which men called the Heart of the Elephant, for no better reason than they named his hold the Elephant's Tower.

I've put this installment of The Timid Soul on Imgur because it's at full size instead of medium, so I can point out the insane level of detail in the art.

Look in the shower/tub: three knobs. Look at those towels: monogrammed "M" for "Milquetoast". Look on the shelf above the sink: two toothbrushes, a shaving brush, a razor. Look below the shelf: a bracket holding it onto the wall. Look at the shower curtain: individual rings holding it onto the rod. Look at the edge of the sink: the bottle cap. Look below the sink: a pipe connecting the sink to the wall. Look at the wrinkles in the bathmat Caspar is standing on.

As for the joke: although the term "probiotics" is relatively new, the concept of "friendly microbes that are good for your gut" was first propounded by Elie Metchnikoff in 1907.

AUNT GWEN'S COLD SHAPE (!)

Vargo posted:

This was one of the most egregious of Batiuk's sins, imo. He told the press he was going to dedicate 6 weeks to the story of Bull's suicide following a CTE diagnosis (which, again, cannot be diagnosed in a living person), and instead was like a week and half of flashback to a thing we already knew, another week of Les reacting smugly to the death of a guy he didn't like in high school, and three weeks of pizza ghost.

Reading it again here, I almost wonder if newspaper backlash to the CTE storyline was so strong that publishers truncated it and skipped ahead to the pizza stuff. It felt like the CTE storyline didn't really end so much as trail off fartingly? Am I misremembering? And is that even a thing that could happen? It would require coordination from all the papers that run FW, or from the distributor... I dunno, it was just such a weird, mishandled thing

Fortunately (or rather, "fortunately"), elderly Amos and Edda are still going at it even as AARP members, with the added layer that now you can picture them as your grandparents! Aren't you excited for this strange new turn?

It could be the artwork of Bob Dunn, who was ghosting for Hatlo as early as 1939. He's listed as artist for the feature starting in 1966 (Hatlo died in 1963).

(April 6, 1967)

The angry birds thing seems like it's about five years too late.
Looking it up, it started a year after the first movie and around the same time as a bunch of animated shows on Rovio's Toons.TV app that are now just on youtube. It may have made sense to push the brand for maximum saturation at that time, even if it was 7 years after the first game's release.
To me it seems anachronistic in that it's a newspaper-style comic for kids, in the age of smartphones... based on a smartphone game. Three strips per week exclusively on gocomics was never going to reach the target audience.

Moralists don't really *have* beliefs. Sometimes they stumble on one, like on a child's toy left on the carpet. The toy must be put away immediately. And the child reprimanded. Centrism isn't change -- not even incremental change. It is *control*. Over yourself and the world. Exercise it.
