Does anyone in comics do a worse job writing women than Tom Batiuk? At least in 9CL and Holbrook stuff everyone regardless of gender is an unhinged feral object unrestrained by logic or ethics, Batiuk is just a boring misogynistic old creep.

No, Dustin is drawn by the political cartoonist Jeff Parker.

It's a bit of an odd collaboration, because Kelley is also a politoonist, and his cartoons are reliably right-wing boomer grumbling, but Parker is firmly left-wing. I guess a paycheck is a paycheck, though.

I think you're mistaking Jeff Parker for Norm Feuti, who did Gil and does Retail.

I do dimly recall that interview and that Parker came off as a reasonable guy in it, buuuut even then he's still putting himself in Kelley's service each and every day drawing his strip, and it takes a lot more than drawing a video game accurately to make up for that.

I'm really not sure about the message we're supposed to take away from this. That you should forgive your partner for being completely terrible to you just because they said sorry and promised they'd do better. That if you can't find anyone, you should lower your standards just so you're no longer alone. That it's good to need your partner and this is toootally not tying your sense of self-worth to them.

And then this smarmy old rear end in a top hat slips and cracks his head on the ground. The End.

The worst part is that I can totally imagine Batiuk patting himself on the back for writing this and thinking he passed the Bechdel test.

Team Evans comes close, with how much women in Luann are written to appeal and be hated by incels.

As someone who's been lurking for the past couple of months: Half the time I can't loving tell if McEldowney is doing a comic set in the present or in the past, and I genuinely thought that whole bit about Edda hating the sandwiches was supposed to be an overplayed morning sickness joke, instead of a flashback about bad cooking. There is no warning or indication that he's skipping back and forth through time, and characters talk and behave the exact same ways no matter what age they are. They also, as stated, look uncannily similar. The kids have adult heads pasted on slightly shorter but still adult-proportioned bodies. The only significant difference is hairstyle and clothing.

Even if all that is unintended, it highlights his fixation on portraying kids' crushes in the exact same way he portrays their adult romance. I can only hope that the end of the pregnancy arc is within sight, and maybe he'll take a break from being such a creep about Edda and Amos. In conclusion, gently caress you McEldowney, and also

Such is the curse of the good comic in the Comic Strip Thread. Even if it's consistently rad, you don't want to just post "that was rad" every day. So they tend not to get a lot of attention, even if everybody reads and likes them.

I just had a disturbing thought. Given the weird confluence of multiple pregnancy fetishist comic strip creators, is it possible there was someone with one of the syndicates who was selecting for them at one point in time? Did these folks by any chance arrive on the scene during roughly the same period?

Dykes to Watch Out For

Sam's Strip (December 14- December 23, 1961)

And here's some Pogo. Pogo of course was a funny animal comic by Walt Kelly with a pretty hefty reputation for artistry and for political acumen. I've never read it before outside of bits and pieces (and Alan Moore's take on it in Swamp Thing) so I'm excited to be reading it for the first time as I post it. Kelly introduced Pogo the possum and some of his supporting cast in Dell's Animal Comics #1 in 1941, which ran until 1948. After making the jump to editorial cartooning that year he decided to revive his animal characters as a daily strip for the New York Star until that paper folded (only a few strips ran in the left-leaning and short-livedStar, among them Barnaby and two I'm unfamiliar with, Claire Voyant and Little Pedro) . In 1949 it was picked up for national syndication. Pogo's colored Sunday strips are notoriously beautiful, and skipping ahead I for sure agree, but they didn't start until 1950 so we have a ways to go.
