I only have excellent ideas
Gamer Dilbert is as valid an inclusion as like, Mr. Boop, and if you're doing Gamer Dilbert you might as well do Powerup Comics. I guess they'd fit in either here or in the webcomics thread so having them in here is fine with me.

Anyway here are some Ruthless Rhymes for Martial Militants (8/29/1913)

Also, Gamer Dilbert is making me like two things I never thought I would: Gamers and Dilbert.

And from that, to today's Corto Maltese: Just light up a couple of cigars and some citronella, guys, that'll help!, or '?' '?' '!' '?', or Self-hatred can affect all humans from all backgrounds and should not be laughed at

In the comments, Jam says he got the idea from an old issue of Popular Mechanics, and a bit of searching later:

I suppose he changed the original's one gasbag to two so it could be more stable for a water landing. Plus, Lucinde isn't in this strip, but this way he can still draw two round, swelling, forward-thrusting masses.

In this installment of The Timid Soul.... something about Caspar's actions in this one seems wrong to me, for reasons I can't quite verbalize. Also note that this strip is dated 1949, which seems a little off in terms of when you'd need to ask the operator to make a call for you (wikipedia's 'timeline of the telephone' article mentions that direct dialing was introduced in 1951 for long-distance, but I can't imagine Caspar being willing to travel too far from home).

It probably is this one (unless there were several Betty Cornells in Tarkio at the time)!

Happy birthday to Sarah Elizabeth (Cornell) Waugh, or as some of you know her, Betty.

Sarah was born Sept. 2, 1928, in Albany, Missouri.

Sarah graduated from Tarkio High School in 1945 and immediately she moved, with her family, to St. Joseph.

Alas,

Sarah has been under care for severe dementia for the past five years, bust she still has that same sweet smile, the sparkle in her eyes and a love for hymns. Awkward; NOAA had a "Safety Seagull" mascot for some extended period, sometimes referred to as "Salty":
https://www.flickr.com/photos/7279940@N07/432768501
https://web.archive.org/web/20100527085447/http://www.safetyseagull.noaa.gov/

But as far as I can tell it was retired in around 2010, only appearing on a couple old pages and the portfolio of a dude who did some vector drawings of it for an education campaign.

For some reason someone learned of the mascot and made this site.

Nowadays their primary mascots are Owlie Skywarn and Sanctuary Sam the Seal, principally via the National Weather Service:
https://www.weather.gov/owlie/
https://www.weather.gov/media/owlie/Sam%20and%20Owlie%27s%202016%20Book.pdf

...Owlie's anatomy's not so hot. Maybe we can find something else...

https://www.weather.gov/media/owlie/owlie-floods.pdf

Mmmm, that's better. Bear Owlie.

NOAA seems to have gone through a number of one-off mascots, and there's cross-contamination with other federal agencies as well.

I can't dive into this well any deeper atm, but someone does need to let Jim Toomey know that poor Salty is apparently unemployed.

NAVIGATORS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!

Did you ever wonder where the Romans got bread from? It wasn't from Waitrose!

I've said this many times, but I hate that Tor Johnson baby in this strip, but my anger/hatred for how whatsisface depicts this teacher is a close second. Especially after the past six months and with the new semester about to start on the 21st.

Source: I teach (and no, I do not look like a 1960s teenager, nor still live with my parents, nor have long Christmas and summer holidays. But I have inlaws who pretty much think I just work 3 hour days half the year and spend the entire summer off -- for the past 15 years, without fail, they ask me if I'm going to get a job every summer to make a little money between spring and autumn semesters instead of just 'lying around the house.')
