In broad strokes a hold is funds taken from your available balance while a transaction is in the process of clearing. And if the hold is really big, like a the cost of a hotel room, it could keep you from doing other transactions with your debit card, or even cause you to generate insufficient fund fees if the timing of transactions is real bad.
So sometimes when I pay for something, the available balance in my account is reduced immediately but the "actual" balance doesn't change until, I guess, the transaction is fully processed? Whatever the reason, there's sometimes a difference between the two numbers. But I don't see how this is a problem? I don't want to be able to spend more than the available balance, because that would be more money than I have. If I have $100 and I spend $30 then I can't buy something that costs $80 - whether I'm using cash or a debit card.

howe_sam posted:

I think we've gotten better about handling this stuff in the twenty years since this strip but I remember back in the day the advice to customers was book hotel rooms with your credit card, then pay with your debit card when you get to the hotel.
I still don't understand what difference this would make? You've still only got as much money as you've got.

howe_sam posted:

And as for online, I just meant if your debit card gets compromised it's a direct line to your actual money instead of the funny money of a credit line.
I guess, but either way you just contact the bank and it gets refunded.

A number of American banks will - or at least used to - happily not take holds into account when displaying your available balance because it encourages you to accidentally overdraft yourself for which they can charge you a fee for initiating an unarranged overdraft, a fee for the failed transaction that failed because you didn't have enough money, and immediately begin charging daily interest on the negative balance of both.

A lot of places will place holds greater than the amount being charged for various reasons. Gas stations and hotels are the biggest offenders. (Gas stations I guess because they have you pay before you pump the gas, so they want to cover what they assume the max amount of gas dispensed is? Hotels are in case you trash your room or something)

This can be a problem for people who do have enough money to pay for the thing, but don't have extra money in the bank to cover a bunch of $50-100 holds that will go away once the actual charge goes through. Credit cards solve this problem because you don't care how much of a hold is being put on them, since you just pay for the charges that go through at the end of the billing cycle.

Oh. My bank just doesn't let me spend money I don't have. If I try to use my card to pay for something that costs more than my available balance the transaction just fails. The only way my balance can go negative is from direct debits. I don't really know why, but it doesn't cost me anything if it happens. At least, not if I put money in to cover it. I guess if I took too long they might charge me something but it's never come up.

I don't think that applies here either. I don't drive and I rarely stay at hotels, but I'm pretty sure we pay for petrol after getting it so you just get charged whatever the specific amount is, and I'm pretty sure when I've stayed at hotels I just paid the correct amount in advance? I think they keep your card details so they can charge you any additional costs later if they need to?

I've heard of a similar car game called Ziggity -- it's basically road bingo, where you have a list of things that might be seen from a car and the points each one is worth. The first person to point them out and yell "Ziggity (thing)" scores the point value of that thing. Looks like the Duck has been roped into playing without seeing the list.

Plus the opinions are slightly different from Everett's usual, though to be honest he has never been entirely consistent in his positions.
