I've appended a little update to today's DtWOF post but it's a neat enough reference that I want to point a little finger at it here. The Joan Benson credited in the margins of today's strip is, I'm almost 100% certain, the Joan Benson who features in Fun Home and who gets a song all about her in the Fun Home musical!
I'm changing my major to Joan,
I'm changing my major to sex with Joan
With a minor in kissing Joan

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzLVpxt07lA

I usually find Bechdel's "tip of the nib" things a little inscrutable which I imagine is kind of the point-- crediting private in-jokes or goofs, and I'm sure that in 1991 Joan Benson was equally obscure to most of the strip's readers. And now she's famous! Famous to people who like Broadway musicals. Get it, Joan.

I've no fondness for old Mark Trail and new Mark Trail looks like it could be decent, but... who is it for? What's the point of bringing in a new writer to do a zombie strip if they're going to deliberately alienate the only people who care about that strip any more? Why not have that writer make a completely new strip instead? "This thread" is not a viable audience, especially since none of us look at their site ads.

Nu-Nancy showed that bringing people in from the webcomics world is a viable business model. You get an onslaught of immediate press and then the backlash-making fun of backlash cycle, and what you're left with is a new base that's interested in sharing your product online and driving engagement, which you can then use to... sell the strip?

Admittedly, I'm not an expert on how this industry works, and Nancy lends itself more to sharing, but there is some sort of precedent there.

Also, in all mediums, the answer to "why not have them make a totally new _____" is always "because it's cheaper to maintain copyright/trademark on IP that you already own than it is to register and secure rights to something brand new."
