Batiuk has some weird loving ideas about what constitutes romance. This includes Pete proposing to his girlfriend with a cheaply-made plush toy from a carnival game that he wasted thousands of dollars to get, while admitting that he was supposed to use said money to buy an actual engagement ring. And let's not forget Batiuk's most romantic couple ever, Les and Cayla, who Les consistently ignored throughout their decade because he can never get over a stupid corpse. So I guess Ophelia's an actual trans metaphor now? Pretty hosed up to confirm it in a strip where the "joke" is that the gopher does the equivalent of misgendering her.

amigolupus posted:Batiuk has some weird loving ideas about what constitutes romance. If my wife gave me a little memento of where we had our first date for our anniversary I'd actually find it extraordinarily touching and romantic. Also if you have been married or even just in a relationship long enough I think it's almost universal that anniversaries become less about big showy gestures and more about a little cute or sentimental token of affection and appreciation. Of all the things to get mad at Tom Batiuk about this is strange to me, I think the salad dressing and even the little "salad years" joke are both good.

Honestly, I had my doubts about this one at first, but if Harry's found someone as sentimental and corny as he is, I say he's found a soul mate. On the other hand, I will never get tired of reminding everyone Les's proposal to Cayla was a walking tour of important locations from his relationship with Lisa. It just screams "You will always be the runner-up." And she still said yes.

Old, familiar love. All right, that's fair. I just found it hard to take seriously as a romantic since Funky Winkerbean loves to have characters say terrible jokes with a smirk. My favorite part about this is "how do we tell the readers that this is a lumberjack? Oh, I know, give them a flannel shirt!" Yeah, Lindesfarne and her friends were really quick to set Ophelia up with a new identity. Even hacked the government files to set it up for her and everything.

Edge of Edge "...It -- it's John Glynn, the CEO of Andrews McMeel! And he's telling me my contract's expired and I have to leave Gocomics!" Yes, that's it, the very last Edge on Gocomics before it was removed. You can now find it (in reruns again) on tapas.io. I know better than to throw dirt on Edge's grave again, especially since Jam seems determined to continue with it, but it's someone else's problem now. Richard's Poor Almanac Since Gocomics doesn't date, or even arrange, their back catalog of RPA, you occasionally get older versions of strips that Thompson later redid. Which is why you get the "comics page" joke repeated from yesterday. I'm pretty sure the guy reading the paper is a caricature of Gene Weingarten, the WaPo humor columnist. You don't get enough Ulysses-based humor in the comics these days, either. Bonus Ad! A tale of villainy, heroism, and cough syrup in the Great White North!
