The Green Hornet '41 #16 of 24![]() Axa ![]() ![]() I think the bees are better characters than Matt. And I agree, Modesty and Willie's relationship is one of the best parts of the comic, and honestly something I wish more stories would emulate.

One time I was riding in a car while my friend was driving us down a winding country road. We crested a hill and saw a peacock in the middle of the lane. We were going to fast to avoid it on such short notice. The peacock was facing straight at us and fully deployed his tail feathers, just before we hit him. I still laugh when I think about how that was completely the wrong evolutionary response to the situation.

Much like how a Deer will stand Stock still if you are coming at it, but will also run right into your path, or even avoid you, and TURN AROUND and smash into the side of the vehicle. Their whole response is based around predators that would be confused with the erratic movements. They have nothing in their playbook for " thing that travels in straight line". I choose to believe the Powerful Katrinka is simply immune to anything as trivial as barbed wire! And Popeye is always fantastic and I appreciate the order of the strips because pee-yew, Rip Haywire finally lost my goodwill by repeating the exact same plotline three times in a row.

Powered Descent posted:It seems like mega-hit comic strips -- let's use a definition of "pretty much everyone would recognize the main character" -- used to come around at the rate of several per decade. But not anymore. The last strip I can think of that became that kind of sensation was Dilbert, and that happened over 25 years ago. I do think Pearls reached the Cathy/Beetle Bailey level. But that was started effectively 2002 (technically Dec 31, 2001). Which, by the 10 year rule, means the strip that has a running gag about legacy strips is now a - legacy strip. There's a lot of webcomics I love but they just don't get an audience like the newspapers could. Biggest hit I can think of is Andrew Hussie's Homestuck but that was really sui generis and pretty niche. It seems off that they don't get going - comics were originally a big draw to get people to read newspapers, and now people can follow them for free. But they don't. Edit: xkcd has gotten some traction in popular culture. curtadams fucked around with this message at 23:39 on Dec 15, 2020 |

The Bloop posted:What are they? Aren't these the Moomins' "relations" that abused their hospitality in another story? They also grew from seeds in the first story as well. As for what they are? Beats me. All I know is they like a good lightning-rave. Otherwise they seem like harmless pests that just scare people a bit. (It's probably best to just dismiss how they acted in the first story, where they were another round of poor relations, as I don't think they ever get treated the same way in subsequent ones. Moomin and the Brigands very much feels like a pilot story to introduce the setting, which then got retconned once it went 'on the air' so to speak with story 2.)

In this installment of The Timid Soul (July 26, 1937), HT Webster loved to draw. Look at Caspar's shadow on the pool edge. Look at how his reflection in the water properly represents the bend of his knees. Look at how the pole's reflection (like the pool ladder's reflection) has two parts: one on the part of the water that's shaded, and one on the part that isn't. Notice how both the pole and the ladder are the center of ripples. You see that little blob at the end of the pole's reflection? That's the reflection of Caspar's hands: notice how if it weren't for the caption box, it would connect with the reflection of Caspar's arms. ![]()
