In this installment of The Timid Soul (June 2, 1924), Jack Dempsey and Luis Angel Firpo (in particular, the 1923 Dempsey vs Firpo fight). Also mentioned, Harry Wills. Note the subjunctive in the second panel: the assumption that Wills wouldn't stand a chance against Dempsey. This is because Dempsey refused to box against a black man.

Axa demands she only breathe polluted, germ filled air. I find it amusing she kept her pants on this time because the artist knew she'd be running around without a way to get her loincloth for a while and he can't draw her totally nude the entire time, makes it too hard to cover certain bits. Anyway I don't understand anything at all about Overboard. I read it and it's like Zippy the Pinhead or something, just absolute nonsense I can't make heads or tails of.
