Just in case you didn't think the comic commenters were horrible people, a bunch of them looked at that Saturday strip of Retail and declared Marla an idiot, because now all her employees will quit or start stealing poo poo.

Star Wars is well looks like that last story had some new characters who I am sure will be vitally important to the Star Wars franchise. Sorry!

Kinda interesting to see the Star Wars comic refer to A New Hope as “Star Wars” while Empire gets the subtitle treatment.

I believe it's the classical "cherub leaning on crossed arms" by Raphael, done by someone with no artistic skill.

Now that you've pointed it out, I can see it. The classic "vase vs. two faces in profile" illusion, only its "cherub vs. canned chicken"

"A New Hope" wasn't added until the 1981 re-release (after Empire came out), so just calling it "Star Wars" would certainly still be common in 1982, when these were coming out.

People like to believe that Star Wars was this carefully planned anthology, but after the first movie they took Lucas's original outline and made up the rest as they needed to.

Starting today I will also be posting what I would say is the companion piece to Footrot Flats, the NZ cult classic Bogor - together with Garfield these formed the bog trinity - when I was growing up if a house had reading material next to the toilet it was almost certainly a Footrot Flats or a Garfield collection, but ever so rarely you would find a sneaky Bogor.

Burton Silver first conceived of Bogor, the titular and slightly eccentric woodsman, after being alone on a family plot of land in the middle of the bush for half a year. According to legend Silver then shopped around a batch of 35 strips to editors until being commissioned for a weekly strip by the New Zealand Listener after the editor reviewed only the first 30 strips, with the 31st introducing Bogor's marijuana plantation. On discovery of this, the furious editor forced Silver into a compromise wherein only the hedgehogs would be allowed to grow and smoke pot.

As the first collection is mostly the initial strips drawn to shop around for publication without quite having a voice yet, I intend to post a page at a time (usually two strips).

The second one of this first batch is link-only because I think that while it was probably fine in 1973 to depict a Nazi salute as shorthand for being a dictator, the strip doesn't say anything beyond simply depicting it and as such I don't think it ever actually was fine let alone appropriate now, but I scanned the strip and included it for historical purposes.

These "teachers have free time during snow days" strips are one of the more annoying ones in this godawful comic.

There's also how Dawn never talks about trying to move to France to be with Hugo, even back in that stupid storyline. Dawn keeps acting like Hugo is the one who needs to make all these big changes in his life, while she sits around waiting for her perfect life to happen. She's insufferably selfish, just like Wilbur, and I still can't believe Moy wrote them getting to keep their happy relationships.
