I AM NOT BEING PAID TO CORRECT OTHER PEOPLE'S POSTS! DONKEY!!

In this installment of The Timid Soul (March 4, 1935), it's interesting to see how far back the stereotype of "dentist's office has old magazines" goes.

Look at the detail on that dentist's chair.

Oh no, every living thing except plants (*) in the K&K universe is fully sentient. Even microbes and viruses.

Somehow the worst part of this response is that some plants aren't sentient, because I hadn't even thought about plants. Is the tree that the main family lives in sentient because of shenanigans, orrrrr I don't even know how to finish this question because the K&K world is so hosed up

If anything it's even worse with the insects since most animals here are kinda scaled up to human size while insects are still normal insect size, so insectivores are basically murdering dozens if not hundreds of people a day.

I haven't even tried to rationalize Lindesfarne experimenting on mouse-sized mice while human-sized rodents are so prevalent in the setting. In some cases including Lindesfarne, before she was retconned/bullshitted into being a hedgehog rather than a porcupine. An insectivore-sized insectivore already consumes a huge number of insects; a human-sized insectivore consuming enough insect-sized insects to stay alive would be a wholly unimaginable mass murderer.

e: not even getting into the obvious issues with having lab mice that are fully sentient/sapient

The very short version is: the Birdluminati have an Intelligence Beam that they can use to make people smart (or smart-er, as the case may be and it also has a reverse setting but don't think too hard about that because the implications are extra horrifying); if used on non-sentient living things, such as plants, it makes them sentient. The tree the family is living in isn't sentient right at this moment in time, but will later get accidentally zapped by the Intelligence Beam.

Ah, I knew of the Birdluminati but not their Intelligence Beam and it's somehow a relief to know that not every plant has to live a miserable life of torment. Unfortunately for everyone else, a huge swathe of them are still at the risk of dying at the whim of a random predator, with absolutely no recourse, including actively penalizing prey species for trying to arm themselves against predator species.

Was the beam used by mistake, meaning that they accidentally brought a sentient, immobile, borderline defenseless intelligence into existence, or was it intentional for some likely-contrived reason? I'll be more than content to get a high-level answer and wait for the actual storyline to pop up in the thread.

Nigel, Miss Aura's son, was playing around with it, and it accidentally went off. It hit a few things, including the tree.

Given the anti-sentience mode, someone could have just undone it. On one hand, that's borderline murder: granting life to something and promptly revoking it is pretty heinous. On the other hand, most of the main characters in K&K have killed hundreds to many, many thousands of fully sentient beings*, so I can't even begin to try to figure out how morality and ethics would work in this universe.

*: a human-sized insectivore, assuming they needed to scale up insect consumption (since insects are still insect-sized) directly proportional to mass would likely need to consume dozens or hundreds of insects per day to stay alive, each of which was a sentient being with a family, interests, hopes, and dreams

Real world reason for the Ekox name change was that Koivisto and co. hadn't realised that there already was a real Finnish company named Ekox. Apparently the owner took it all in good humor, but in the comic the company will now be known as Ekoday.

There are both normal-scale sentient insects (Like Tammy, the moth that Fenton was cheating Limdesfarne with) and tiny scale sentient insects (like the ones who tried to get Fenton extradited and were eaten by the jury) in K&K.
