My proverbial money's on that the comic was less blatantly/purely "gently caress those lazy millennial" back in 2010, too.

but yeah, at the comic being unpredictable this thing only has like five jokes. And three of them are variants on "GOD I, the writer, hate Dustin the character so much"

I only have excellent ideas
Dustin is like some modernist East European novella where a normal person just becomes universally and violently loathed for no reason. Poníženie by Jan Biepks or something. Send me back in time, I'll get this done.

Or you know what, I live in a college neighborhood in a big city and I often see posters and fliers warning people about known neo-nazis or alt-right figures. Maybe Dustin has an evil Proud Boy doppleganger and those women just recognized him from there. Who can say for sure.

Yeah, the art is... both of those dudes are clean, well-groomed, and wearing average clothes. Which is what you get at a bar! Is there an invisible swastika tattooed on their foreheads? What about them makes them so repellent to women?

They're not dressed like they're in American Psycho and therefore obviously poor. This repels women because they are all gold-digging whores.

Dustin probably just smells like cabbage farts or something else that wouldn't show up in print. That it's never mentioned would fit in with the rest of he lazy writing.

b) look at that Garfield! So much variety in panel layout, the art, the colors.... you get the little detail of the happy salesman, as well as the varied Garfield poses. The gag is okay but the art really elevates it.

Yeah these posts of vintage Garf really remind me why everybody I knew was so berserk about it in the early/mid-90s. Those thick reprints you could get from the Scholastics sales weren't especially sophisticated comedy but the vibrancy and pleasant sense of chaos of the drawings was just perfect for kids of a certain age.

One thing I've never understood about Dustin is, what about him is supposed to be so off-putting to women? Like, if it was that he's "unemployed" (as the comic's description incorrectly states) and living with his parents I'd get it, but it usually doesn't even get that far. There's clearly meant to be something about his appearance and it's just not coming across in the art. Like, that's the joke here, right? These women see him and instantly decide to leave because he's... so ugly? Badly dressed? What? :iiam:

Maybe they can just sense that he's Ed Kudlick's son and that makes them instantly hate Dustin? :v: Or maybe Dustin's sister talks poo poo about him all the time on social media.

I do actually remember "study parties" organized by RAs, generally right around midterms and finals where they'd provide snacks and stuffs in the common room. This was at a tiny little liberal arts college and I only lived in the dorms my first year but I definitely remember getting e-mails about them.

I had a friend who was served as an RA through law school for the funding who organized things like that although he said people didn't really show up. This was at a much bigger school with, from my impression, a much more centralized population of students in dorms.

I want someone to do that thing where they take a stylized character and make a "realistic" version with Michelle.

And yeah, my RAs did events and stuff. I don't specifically remember any study ones, but this was 20 years ago.

My first day of freshman year, my RA taught us all the trick to pirating cable TV in that dorm building (there's just enough space to squeeze a coax cable beside the radiator pipe running through all the rooms) and went along on the run to the store to pick up the big bag of cables, splitters and boosters we'd need to wire up the entire floor from one cable subscription.

There was one strip in particular a while ago where she suddenly was being drawn with wider-set eyes. I don’t recall if it was commented on.
