Got the CMP Rack Grade M1911A1 in, it's a '44 Ithaca frame with a Remington Rand slide. Heavily reparked to the point that it looks new - has a commercial barrel in it from the post-war period with a non-matching serial number on it and weirdly enough, checkering on the front of the trigger guard. Will try to get some pictures up when the light is better in the coming week or so. Shipped with a Mecgar mag as well which I also thought odd.

Fun Shoe

I bet your 1911 has some really interesting history! I was talking with my pop about folks receiving modified 1911s from the CMP and he told me that he'd seen a handful of modified frames and swapped out parts when he shot with some US Army pistol team back in the day. Unfortunately, those mods are probably poorly documented and the origin of the mods are likely lost to the sands of time.

Yeah, I think I've seen somewhere about shooting teams stippling the frame. I cna't give any kind of source it's just a thing I think I know floating around in that nebulous soup of "poo poo I think I read on the internet sometime in the last 20 years."

I carried it in a Thunderwear holster.

For real though, I shot it last year in one of our trademark acid rain storms and then put it away without cleaning and oiling it.

On a scale of one to "Pepsi carbine," how bad is it?

Realistically, probably a 3 or 4. Mostly just aggressive surface rust. A couple spots, I cleaned the active rust off but you can still tell.

It sucks (but is also kinda fun) but you'll never get provenance on the checkering. I went down the rabbit hole on one of the cmp guns posted months ago and most likely its a shooting team, with some people saying it was an early SOF-D think, but no records available to us exist.

They're still chugging through numbers! CMP says they're still processing, and people are updating the CMP forum thread as of earlier today (they seem to be around 149xx). They're not accepting any more forms though, so sorry if you missed filing.

Dumb question time: do rounds in an M1 enbloc sit flush with the back of the clip, or is there supposed to be a bit of a gap for all cartridges?

Flush. The base of each case should be touching the back of the enbloc. Load it, then look at it from the side to see if any rounds are sticking up higher than the others. If so, pop the cartridge on either end out, reseat the errant cartridge, and load the last cartridge again.

Pushing them back usually they will pop in when seated all the way. I like to load 7, make sure they are all seated and snap to the back, then load the final round like you would with a traditional magazine, making sure it's flush with the rest. Sometimes rounds can be a little misaligned side to side at that point, I like to give the two columns of rounds a little twist so everything seats together. Keeps the en bloc from being a little fat and will go in easier.

Also you can pick which end to load the last round from, this determines if the top round is on the right or left. It'll load with either, but my M1 definitely likes it more to the left than the right

Yeah, when I'm loading a clip usually I do something similar - load the first seven, then tap them against the table so that they seat as far back as they can, then load the top one in kind of like it's a mag.

If you've got ammo with a solid crimp to the round (most military ammo, dunno about commercial) you can also tap the loaded clip points down on a table or something to seat them back a bit.

Interesting. I've shot a lot of Garands and loaded a lot of enblocs, and I've never noticed a rifle that preferred a clip loaded one way or the other. Actually... I've never had a single Garand have chronic issues that weren't fixed by new spring sets. It's just such a reliable platform.

There are a few things that can go wonky with the mag-related internals. I had one years back (a Blue Sky import with a pretty meh barrel that I bought for a rebarrel project that never happened) that was temperamental in that it liked to spit the last 2 or 3 rounds out with a premature enbloc ejection. The goon I sold it to had a friend or uncle or something that knew a gently caress load about garands and later told me that the enbloc retaining catch had a chip on it or something and there was one other small mag part that was a little hosed.

Now, that said, compare that to the failure states for mildly wonky parts in German autoloaders.

Interesting, my neighbor has had a really pretty Garand since 2006 or so that likes to spit clips out early, despite having replaced the clip retainer spring. He says it seems to prefer American enblocs for whatever reason but I'm not sure if he ever replaced the clip retainer itself.

Oof. I'm sorry to hear that. My understanding is that they won't accept any new forms until the current batch is complete, and then they'll do another cycle if they still have and/or get allocated more 1911s to go through. Keep your fingers crossed!

I tend to try and load my en-bloc clips with the last round on the right so I have a bit more leverage to push down on. But thats small potatoes.

I keep trying to convince myself not to drive to AL just to try and get a 1903...
