Nah, it's cool enough it gets a pass.

I remember showing that to my best friend from grad school (who is a huge aliens fan, and my shooting buddy at the time) and it blew his loving mind. Just amazed someone could pull that off.

So, for whatever it's worth, you are a Cool Motherfucker in the books of someone who's now a tenured german history prof.

Wait, tenure track, or full tenure? My sincerest congratulations regardless; academic job hunt hell is never pleasant.

TT, he comes up for review next year, and all indications are that he's going to get it.

He landed really, really well.

edit: I know many, many other people that bailed the gently caress out without making it. He's part of a pretty small group and frankly it doesn't even come down to his research or teaching being better than anyone else's.

Oh, it's your friend. I thought you were quietly announcing that you'd secured such a position for yourself.

And no, it really doesn't come down to quality of research. I've seen a lot of people advance by getting their names on a paper, but by doing relatively little in terms of actual research. poo poo, I've seen entire government or university departments that produce reams of material, but little substance. If peer review doesn't take the totality of someone's work into account as a part of the process it bloody well should.

Oh god no. I gave up on that dream about two years ago. I"m one of the many academic failures littering the side of the interstate. I'm well into private sector employment now.

I really do miss teaching, but the academy can go gently caress itself. I worked too long for too little with zero recognition of anything I ever did, either financial or otherwise.

Maybe it's because I'm mid-way through a shift and my brain is locked in strengths-based counselling mode, but from where I sit not fitting in with a system that is anything but meritocratic should not be described as a failure.

Computer lab day! Time to spend 45 minutes trying to load pokemon.com!

The fact that I would have had to basically kill myself doing research for 20+ years for very little pay and sacrifice any chance of having a real life outside of the lab just for a loving chance of getting tenure is why my username is now a sad reminder of lost dreams. I quit my PhD three years in; when I realized just how bleak my probable future was. It is pretty crazy to think of all that's happened in my life since I quit six years ago. Whereas if I was still there I would probably still be a year or two from graduating.

Oh well, teaching high school isn't all that bad in the end and I actually get to have a family now. :)

Here's a picture of a tacticlol SKS I saw to make up for the word dump in the pics thread.
Edit: they wanted something like $1500 for it.

My daughter started drawing cats a few months ago. I didn't really pick up on it but my wife correctly interpreted this as meaning she really wanted a cat. As an aside, she drew them with a little diamond on their foreheads which turned out to be what our cat has.

So we got one day after Thanksgiving, a rescue.

This is Lucky. Sometimes I sing to her DOMO ARIGATO MY LITTLE GATO DOMO domo DOMO domo

My wife had customized socks made for me and my daughter with Lucky's face on them

E:
Last night I came up with her title for use in official duties. The Golden Gato. Wife is not impressed.

Thanks for sharing that! Spreading joy and happiness by shooting stuff.

Some time after I made the original thread here I had sent a quick email to MGM Targets saying basically "Hey remember that order you filled to Canada a few weeks ago? Here's what I did with it just as a heads up" and they replied that 1) they were delighted and 2) it had already been shared around the office, so maybe someone there at the time browsed TFR because I hadn't put it anywhere else at the time.

I kind of wish the video and junk was at better quality, cameras have come a long way since then.

I have one that I put into a standard 10/22 wood stock; it only takes slight modification to real furniture to fit.

This has led to people doing some crazy poo poo with them:

They can be converted to full auto with kits pretty easily. That pistol with the HPA tap up there gets 1200 RPM.

Seems rather pointless when magazine capacity is 22 or 30, but ok.

I miss airsoft a little. It was fun running around shooting each other with guns that didn't look like plumbing. I doubt I'd want to actually play anymore, but I look back fondly on playing nearly 20 years ago now.
