While I'm looking forward to this new adaptation, the promotional stills so far (which look good) just doesn't have that creative aura that the Lynch Dune had. However, I'm sure it will be pretty stellar once you see the final product in full motion. It'll be hard for me not compare the two as I've loved the Lynch Dune as a staple of my media consumption diet since I first saw it at 4 years old. A lot of people poo poo on Lynch Dune for straying from the original source material, but forget that Herbert himself was heavily involved in the production and came up with many of the changes because he knew what he put on the page wouldn't translate well into a ~2 hour movie. There was a forward he wrote in a republishing of one of his non-dune novels that goes into this that unfortunately I can't find but folks should really watch / listen to this interview series with Herbert himself talking about the production. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCB56D3BC65D21C17 Nerds get caught up on notions of 'accuracy' and 'authenticity' because their brains make them believe that pointing out discrepancies between source and adaptation because they believe it makes them appear to be smart to others. What sucks with this mindset is that it prevents them from actually enjoying something on its own merits. Jodorowsky's dune concepts would have strayed heavily from the source material but goddamn would that have been such a glorious movie had it gotten off the ground. I was really sad at the end of the documentary about it when Jodorowsky just says straight up that while he personally is done with Dune he'd be thrilled if someone took his Dune bible/storyboards/etc. and made it because like, that would own but of course there's no way in hell it would ever happen. Like I'm very hyped for this new one and nothing against Hans Zimmer but they're clearly not even going to go particularly out there with the music which is like Toto's Dune score absolutely fuckin' rules and, Tyler's Children of Dune score was excellent too he even designed some new wind instruments specifically for it and put a ton of effort into it.

If that movie had somehow gotten funding I think there was still only like a 25% chance it would have been finished and probably a less than 10% chance it would have actually been good. I’m sure it would have been an “experience” no matter what but I don’t think Jodorowsky actually had the skills to direct a movie like that. Living on as one of the ultimate What If movies with a lot of rad concept art is probably the best fate it could have had.

If Jodorowsky's Dune had happened we might never have gotten Alien, and that's not a worthwhile trade.

Alien is good but imagine the even worse hell timeline we'd be living in if anything had prevented Dan O'Bannon from making Return of the Living Dead

I don’t think skill or lack of skill would’ve had anything to do with it. The Holy Mountain is hardly some small, manageable indie...it’s really huge and ambitious, just also very strange and off-putting. He’d have succeeded at making Dune the way he wanted, it’d just be a weird and alienating take on the story. I’d honestly prefer a graphic novel. All his Dune energy went into The Incal anyway...might as well stick with that medium, where Orson Welles or Salvador Dali can still show up.

There had to be so much other cool poo poo in there besides Foss and Moebius (who are great). Although his Dune probably would have been too hallucinogenic for its own good, I *loved* the storyboard of the movie's opening (which concludes with a blue cloud of pure spice seeping out of the wreckage of a smuggler ship). The thought I had most reading the Incal was "drat, that would look great in a movie".

Yo where's the fuckin trailer already.

Maybe there's some problems in post but lots of other movies release trailers with incomplete effects and music so who knows. Hasn't been much in the way of marketing at all, has there?
|
![]() |

Yeah, I'm guessing if it hadn't been for the pandemic we'd have a trailer already, but film marketing has been very very slow for the past couple of months. Very few trailers. Studios are moving release dates constantly so they're probably just playing a waiting game with it. Still, seems strange that we just got a bunch of stills then nothing. Usually that's what precedes a teaser trailer.
