The base is made in a bunch of natural ice caves which were infested with monsters. the rebels didn’t know this because they’re desperate and only just got there (they’re just setting up a perimeter at the start of the movie).

They scrapped a whole wampas in the base subplot, that scene where some random is examining a mutilated tauntaun in the base is left over from that. I guess it was repurposed in the shadows of the empire vidya game
