For me, it was the pointed close up shot of the Space Duct Tape around Anakin's lightsaber. I let out a long, overly loud groan because that was the moment I knew inescapably that the movie was going to be nothing but a mad dash to erase The Last Jedi at the expense of telling its own story.

WAY before that. This is like in the opening 20 minutes in that mad breathless blitz that included Kylo visiting like 50 planets looking for Palpatine and LIGHTSPEED SKIPPING.

I didn't laugh out loud in the theater, but it was clear it was going to be horseshit from the first minute, when the central plot point to what was ostensibly the conclusion of a trilogy was revealed in the opening text crawl.

I remember midnight sun being a decent "poo poo happened behind the scenes of said movie" but as I typed that i recall watching videos mostly about Ghostbusters 2016 so maybe.

It's just weird that the guy who made 2 out of the 3 sequels, laid out all the poo poo that messed it up, and ended the entire triogly with some lame poo poo is the one that everyone shrugs at. But the lady and guy who made the middle one get yelled at.

Abrams is bad in a boring way, but Johnson makes a lot of weird choices that are more interesting to pick apart. The weirdness of those choices actually struck some people in exactly the right way so they'll be more energetic about defending them, as opposed to the bad but forgettable Force Awakens.

I'm not really certain why the worst of the nerds chose the things they did to rage out at, I guess maybe Rose does emasculate the male leads with her earnestness?

Rise is clearly a corporate product that was the result of high-level meddling, and it's impossible to tell how much of it is Abrams' fault and how much of it was decisions made elsewhere. I really don't think it was Abrams' decision to have a major plot point be presented only in Fortnight, for example. And Abrams hasn't really made much of an effort to talk it up or defend it after it came out.

Last Jedi's weird decisions and baffling plot points seem to be almost entirely Johnson's choices - though it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out that some of the stranger moments were the result of corporate meddling. And Johnson and his supporters have been pretty aggressively defending the film's choices, so that leads to a more combative atmosphere.

And, of course, Jedi came out first, so it got the stronger backlash; nobody was expecting Rise to pull the trilogy out of its nosedive.

Well

He pissed of the chuds by introducing an Asian character and an SJW pink haired yaaas queen slay admiral that chewed out the male main character

He pissed of old star wars fans with the way they wrote Luke

He pissed off new Star wars fans with the way they wrote FN

He pissed off fans of TFA because it didn't follow up on the mystery boxes and what not but instead did its own thing, and is blamed for "derailing" the trilogy

And finally he made some utterly baffling choices that muddle or undermine the themes and ideas of the film.

All of this combined made it an easy film to dislike

Edit: I don't know how much executive meddling there was going on here, and how much of the above Rian is responsible for. I heavily suspect there was at least some exec insisting on sidelining FN at least

People are capable of radically changing in the span of 30 years from adolescence to middle age. Luke being a burnt out gently caress up who squandered his potential thanks in large part to forces beyond his control is something that's actually very resonant for with folks who were 40-25 at the time The Last Jedi was made for some weird reason

Also Luke's arc from TFA to TLJ was lifted 100% from George Lucas's original treatment for VII-VIII-IX that he left Disney when they bought LucasFilm. Luke was an old broken recluse failure shithead who has his faith and power restored by training an optimistic young girl how to use the Force.

McCloud posted:

Ya got me there, chief. Finn's arc kinda sucked from TLJ onward. Dude should have been a Jedi and hooked up with Rey, and they shouldn't have broken up the cast like they did.

McCloud posted:

The Mystery Boxes were always empty. JJ didn't put poo poo inside them and blowing them all up was a great move. Snoke was a boring-rear end empty suit of an archetype and Kylo Ren merc'ing him randomly and then becoming the main villain was a shocking and brilliant twist because he was an infinitely better character to follow and his journey to becoming the top villain was one of the best parts of the trilogy until Abrams ruined with "Somehow... [soul-ejecting sigh] Palpatine returned."

Duel of the Fates was able to rend a coherent ending out of where The Last Jedi left the status quo, and it was written by the guy who gave the world The Book of Henry. The gently caress was Abrams' excuse?

McCloud posted:

The theme of the film is "Failure is the greatest teacher of all". How does a film that is 90 minutes of people loving up royally and then learning from their mistakes so they don't gently caress up again when it comes put up or shut up time "undermine its own themes"?

I mean you left it a little ambiguous as to whether you believed what you posting rather than posting it for the sake of argument, but the point remains. Most of peoples "I will die mad about this" contentions with the film are remarkably flimsy and fall apart when poked at even slightly. The biggest one being the all-encompassing one "people got eternally mad over and constructed their own set of QAnon-level insanity around a movie about space wizards made for children"

I can think of several sort of muddled thematic messages off the top of my head. The movie has "self-sacrifice is heroic and great" and "self-sacrifice leads only to destruction" moments. TLJ also has this weird moral throughline of "you should have listened to what your superiors told you," which is really weird laid next to Rose's speech on the casino planet and Rey's necessary realization that there are things Luke and the Jedi texts can't teach her.

I like TLJ but it has so much going on and much of it works at cross purposes. There are good-faith criticisms to be made here.

Grendels Dad

Popular culture has passed you by.

I also just have to disagree with Snoke's death being a good thing because he is one-dimensional. It wouldn't have been difficult to flesh him out in TLJ, and it would have been really necessary because it could have helped fleshing out the FO. As it is, we know as much about the FO by the end of TLJ as we do at the beginning, only now Kyle is their leader.

Snoke is both the mastermind manipulator who orchestrated Kylo's corruption, Luke's failure, and every other major event of the last few decades, and also an empty shell who neither Kylo nor anybody else owes any loyalty to. His death is both a major moment in Kylo's development as a character, and also a non-event that changes nothing.
