i remember making a ringtone back in 2009 or something but iirc you just had to rename the .m4a to like .m4r or something stupid like that

anyway i never used it because ive never not had my phone on silent. its still on my phone tho, thx to icloud

I vaguely recall it was something about the record companies not wanting mp3s or m4as being directly usable as ringtones, cause they'd lose a revenue stream?

i remember using let's get it on as a ringtone in college. i also used some mountain goats song, i wanna say jaipur but i don't remember. in grad school i used 16 shells from a .30-06. i had the law and order noise as my text ring tone.

now i use whatever the default is for the three times a year i take it off silent

wow it's hard to imagine janitoring ringtones in the year of progress 2022

in the era of premium ringtones i was a hipster and/or snob about it and only used MIDI ringtones. sure, phones could play WAV files, but that just sounded like (garbled, noisy) music, not a telephone ringing. i felt that the electronic tones of MIDI files, in addition to being a lot more clear on a tiny phone speaker, were more appropriate for a ringer.

the peak era of premium ringtones was probably ~2 years before most phones could play MIDIs or WAVs. it was when you had four options for ringtones:

1. use the lovely default ringtones in your nokia 3310
2. compose your own using the terrible built-in editor
3. download them from the internet and transfer them using the almost unobtainable PC link cable
4. text a magic word to a premium rate phone number from a sleazy TV ad, not realising you were actually signing up for a subscription where they would send you five ringtones a week and would not stop until all your phone credit was gone.

I used to have the pager sound from GTA3 for my ring tone.

Now I just have the ringer turned off because I don't want to talk to anyone.

i had software to chop up MIDI files and extract certain tracks and configure them for the Nokia synth table and everything. hell, i probably still have MIDIs of the austin powers theme song and stuff sitting deep in an archive folder somewhere.

I had one of those Sony phones that could record short audio clips and use those as ringtones but the quality was awful

also it had a jog dial which was a way superior form of input than anything else at the time

i used mulatto butts from archer as a ringtone for a long time. i converted it myself, and previous poster was correct it is as simple as renaming an .m4a to .m4r and popping it into itunes.

i used this for my text tone when my friend texted me for years:

I had E1M1.mid as my ringtone on all my old Nokia phones (I was that nerd who splashed out for the PC cable).

then once I got a smartphone it was random wav files and then I got an iPhone and it’s been on silent for more than a decade lol

if you go to places like Saudi Arabia or Dubai then there are shops who specialise in making one-off tacky poo poo like this, and people with too much money and absolutely no taste lap it up. the whole point of it isn't to be good, just to be really expensive for no reason so that some spoilt failson can buy it because he can.

a bit more games than yospos but this reminded me of forza horizon 5's allowance of e1m1 as a car horn. and there are variants.

ok so maybe that's not funny, but the cruelest horn is the microsoft teams calling horn:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fs8DrMuBZUA

expressly designed to coerce a pavlovian panic response. you know how certain sounds can make some cats and dogs freak out? freak out spouses or fellow players who use ms teams.

i think the gimmick was it came with a 24/7 concierge service but, like, you had to buy the ugly phone to use it so that specific kind of user must have been amazing to get calls from

years ago i made the mistake of using the enterprise-d door chime as my ringtone on a work phone.

and then one evening i watched a star trek and someone hit the doorbell to picard's ready room and i got a flash of full-on work anxiety.

i changed my ringtone back to the default that very night.

we have to use WebEx teams (lol) and the ringer volume is incredibly loud no matter what you try and set it to and god it's horrible

as far as I can tell the settings menu for it is actually a joke because none of them do anything, unlike WebEx where they work, or jabber where they work but get ignored until you open and close the menu

so actually I would say that software from Cisco is actually funny and tech and poo poo.
