at this point there are only 3 google products you can be sort of sure won’t be cancelled: search, gmail and YouTube and even then those are sort of a 70% confidence at best they won’t be cancelled

Cybernetic Vermin

search almost highest risk of the three, because you just know there are dozens of pitches for relaunching search as a weird ai thing floating around google atm. which they wouldn't view as a cancellation, but realistically indistinguishable

why are you letting a google app exist on your phone to harvest data instead of just using the built in mail app?

also kazza lite, the one that had the built-in malware. i kinda miss those kinds of file sharing, even if they really sucked. soulseek just isn't the same somehow.

idk, preferred the look and feel of the gmail app to the mail app. so much of my important crap outside of work is tied to my gmail and gdrive :sigh:

The have been adding increasingly convoluted ways to login as external app and get an imap/smtp login token.
If your app supports that request system then it works fine, if it doesn't you have to generate your own app specific login keys and so on but it still works.

"Let's shove chat and video calling into Gmail. People like Gmail, but they don't use our chat or calling because we keep relabeling, killing, and making horrible backend decisions for political reasons for some reason. So, if they see chat or video calling in email they'll want to use it. Because it's also a communications, you see!" - Big Brain Exec, mid 2019

"Ah, so it turns out that there's a global pandemic that is radically shifting the way office employees are working, in a way that would be massively advantageous to our own business, using our own tools. Let's pause this stupid migration we've just started working on and start implementing key features as quickly as possible so that Hangouts and Chat become the default things instead of Zoom and Slack keep charging ahead and completely refuse to add anything that people actually care about. We can revisit in, say, 2020 2021 2022 2023 After all, who's gonna use that Zoom thing, anyway?" - The same exec, probably, 2020

"LMAO y'all have fun, I'm out of here with millions of dollars in stock, you guys can figure it out I'm sure" - The same exec, probably, later 2020

So much poo poo people internally learned about for the first time when some loving exec announced it in some random conference or something. poo poo that those people had to write in like 3 months, but it's fine, right? This stuff is very easy, this is Google!

I'm still exceptionally salty about how zoom ended up being the default external video calling app, when Google Meet Red Premium or whatever it's called this quarter was there, and worked, and worked well imo, and just needed some changes to allow things like organization changes in meeting. Simple poo poo like letting the meeting owner make joining participants muted by default.

Anyway, I think they've finally added reaction emojis?

google completely losing the videoconferencing race to some tiny company run by a couple retired plantronics dudes - like to the extent that ‘zoom’ is now used as a generic term for all video calls - is a product failure of such a grand extent, such a massive unforced error, that it could only have happened at google. Even MS at its clumsiest could not have bobbled a lead that hard and that fast.
