That stand still stands today, has been there since the physical release. There's no backpressure of furhter releases taking the floor space, just those unsold copies sitting there at an unsellable price. The supply is absolutely constrained right now, i think it's intentional to keep HD content only available on streaming services tbqh

Beve Stuscemi posted:wait, why are store going backwards and stocking dvds but not Blu-ray’s? because most people don't care + people who do they want recurring streaming revenue out of frankly i think there are industry players out there who are pissed HD physical media got as popular as it did and that 4k ever existed - why would you rebuy a movie after already having it in HD or 4K? again this is just theories but people having 4-5x streaming services at 12.99 a month sure is a nice recurring revenue stream instead of people trading movies or thrifting them i mean, check me on this but it's pretty evident out and about on store shelves

Beve Stuscemi posted:wait, why are store going backwards and stocking dvds but not Blu-ray’s? i think it might be as simple as dvds still sell better. like you know the thing where people can't tell the difference between high and low quality audio? that also applies to video so a bunch of people are still perfectly fine buying the cheaper version of the movie.

a bunch of people can't tell the difference because they literally only have a 1080p television. the people who buy a new television every year are the ones most likely to get their movies on a streaming service instead. the people on that advertising board are probably ones with an older television, considering the kids outgrew fitting everyone on their two-seater couch a few years back but they still haven't gotten a bigger one

i'm filling up a plex server, with the goal being a recreation of browsing the center aisles of a hollywood video circa 2007. there's a lot of garbage in there, by design, and a lot of it looks like poo poo no matter what media it's on. so some of it does come down to what i'm specifically up to — if i were only collecting "good" media is probably eschew dvd as well then again, not everything has a blu-ray release. heck, some stuff i've got on there never even got a dvd release

I mean, same... I also rip ever disc to my plex server, but I just started collecting video entirely in 2008 after BR won the HD format war over HDDVD and started there - I was never interested in collecting SD media. like my server now is: I only get a DVD if it's a movie I just absoultely have to have but it's just not available on blu. Otherwise I'll make the stretch. It takes a lot of space to keep the 1:1 images though. This is 100% media on my plex server, nothing else.: Sniep fucked around with this message at 18:49 on May 27, 2024 |

I wanted on demand to feel like an 80/90s video store and I had an electronic programming guide plugin and had content that would simulate channel flipping in 1992 or so. I even had a collection of interesting and absurd public access shows as well as a convincing set of "community announcement" slides all ego/video toaster looking and lovely. I had hdhomerun integration so I had all that and live channels with no cable. But yeah I had all that poo poo; frankenhooker, cobra, escape from new york, a 1985 instructional video on akido, 3 episodes of little house on the prarie, hammer films, a bunch of classics, then faces of death and a copy of ninja scroll, etc. Not all of it for actually watching, just completing the feel when I'm browsing videos. I don't remember how much I had horded total but there were 3000 movies and it honestly got hard to think of new ones after about 1200... crazy blockbusters had 10,000 movies supposedly. Unfortunately the software I was using to do this was pretty glitchy and would keep toppling over so I eventually got tired of janitoring it. Now I just use DLNA and streaming services but I still got several backups of all those movies if someone makes software compelling enough to try again.

well-read undead posted:dvds are sd so they look way worse on a 1080p tv, but yes your overall point stands a dvd with a decent upscaler will probably look better than most hd people see on cable. that's the level of fidelity that they're used to i was absolutely loving astonished when i saw the xfinity cable my parents were paying $140/month for. i could tell that it was hd res, but it had to be compressed down to, oh, i'd take a (very educated) guess and say maybe 0.5-3 mbit, i.e. it looked like complete poo poo. every time there was any motion it was macroblocked as all hell (not to mention fine print on prescription drug commercials or whatever, lol. nearly illegible), and it seemed the chroma subsampling was 4:2:0, so everything was desaturated and color bled all over the place, and they very obviously applied an unsharp mask to everything. idk if this was just the specific box they had or what, but holy gently caress was it bad yet they insisted that it was fine. i knew it wasn't the tv, but it was only after i showed them the same content using a hulu live tv trial that they realized just how loving lovely their cable looked. and overall they were paying comcast something like $190/month (including 30 mbps internet, lmao), and the only reason i know this is because it was going to be raised to $210/month because number so they cut the cord and incidentally use hulu for live tv now because it was the cheapest option that had the lineup they wanted, then switched isps anyway point is most people can't tell that things look like poo poo because they're used to looking at lovely quality video almost all the time. but even then, differences that might be obvious to you and i are not obvious at all to them. ime in general people (not just people in their 70s lol) are absolutely horrible at distinguishing details like that e: oh also upscalers are pretty good nowadays e2: also i'm pretty sure (99.8%) that was h.264, not hevc. if it was, chop those numbers by ~a quarter, either way the bitrate was not at all adequate lol Beeftweeter fucked around with this message at 21:15 on May 27, 2024 |
