it was a productive weekend, i made a track out of the intro of our last stream https://soundcloud.com/trent-hawkins/telecharger-twilight-of-the-dogs. really wish i would have found the energy to make the bassline-rhythm section more interesting by some root note changes a la 12 bar blues. and here's this year's 50th weeklybeats instalment https://soundcloud.com/trent-hawkins/2022-5052a. i hope that come next year i will find the time and willpower to go through all of this year's weeklies and properly finish them into an album thing. i reaalllly hope also tune in tomorrow for this year's last livestream: https://trenthawkins.bandcamp.com/merch/telecharger-livestream-81

Free plugins always good! Arturia giving the MS-20 filter away https://www.arturia.com/products/software-effects/filter-ms-20/overview

That MS20 filter gets really gnarly and chewy, I stuck it after the actual Arturia MS20 plugin on an acid sequence I made (already with filter mod going on) and it sounded killer. Gonna run some breaks through it I reckon also Waves H-Comp is free for about another 36 hours

c music s: did not bring any music making things side form my phone over this Christmas break, instead I am going to focus on the higher level!!! analyzing music I like, breaking it down from the top, and understanding the parts. then once I understand why things were put together a certain way, try my own top down design. current jam:https://youtu.be/2DuvYC3zENI

random mostly useless observation - this 4/4 track im analyzing likes to organize in powers of 2 2^2 beats = 1 bar 2^3 beats = 2 bars (default Renoise pattern length) 2^ 1 1 1 1 beats = 1 beat x 4 = 1 bar = 2^2 beats 2 2 2 2 bars = 2 bars x 4 = 8 bars = 1 section (one voice-idea focus per section) = 32 beats = 2^5 beats 1 1 1 1 section = 1 section x 4 = 1 part (distinct halves of the song analogous to A or B etc. in song forms) = 32 bars = 128 beats = 2^7 beats 1 1 parts = 1 part x 2 = = ~1 AB song (give or take intro and bridge) = 64 bars = 256 beats = 2^8 beats one chord change (e.g. I->V) per two bars one or two voice additions/swaps/introductions per section four sections per part aside from the obvious “4 is a power of two” thing, i suppose this makes sense when you work backwards from 64 bars, though im still not 100% sure why there’s two bars per chord. i suppose to ensure the listener gets familiar with the chord over a long enough time (~5s).

Pollyanna posted:, though im still not 100% sure why there’s two bars per chord. i suppose to ensure the listener gets familiar with the chord over a long enough time (~5s). Because it sounds good, and that’s a nice unit of time for the ear to stabilize before something changes. A different piece might break down as two chords per bar, for the same reasons. Now try melding patterns of powers of 3 over your powers of 2 and see what happens.

I think it's because it's exponential with 4/4 time, I've noticed if I do 3/4 I tend to think in 3 or 6 bar phrases for instance. But yeah, at the end of the day it's just what sounds good really.
|
![]() |
|
you might have noticed how, like, 140bpm tracks seem to have the good part at 0:55. we've been stacking 16 bar loops since the beginning of time
|

yeah house and techno always have cycles of 4x4 beats that end with a small drum fill or other variation. drops, new elements etc almost always happen at the beginning of a 16 or 32 beat segment makes it easy to dj if you know this stuff. also dont listen to me i am a shittty dj but i have had fun playing around with techno like that

being a rock/metal guitarist for 20 odd years I never actually learned how to play bass with fingerpicking. so I've started learning how to do it. ooooh man the blister on my right middle finger after attempting 2112. fuckin ouuuuuch

i think you only build calluses by not playing to the point of blisters, right?

my lovely second hand ibanez gio bass has given up the ghost electronically and I don't think it's worth trying to fix, so I'm thinkin about grabbing a squier jazz bass. one of my favourite bass tones is geddy lee in the early 80s and that's all just jazz bass into compressor and ampeg preamp into the board and gently caress it that sounds perfect to do on the cheap for me for fun

my sons been playing a bit of bass lately, and the bass isn’t too bad but the amp is 28 year old 10-15watt solid state guitar practice amp I got when was 14 might make it a goal to get him an amp with guts so he’s actually hearing the root note lol not just the overtones

despite being curious about guitars and how their interface guides you towards certain musical choices I am not in the mood to learn to play one cuz I have way too much to do already

irs and modeling are amazing now. i dont even gently caress with my amps any more. i double click on one of my neural dsp amps and go to town. they're so fun

I just learned that Joe Pass, one of the greatest jazz guitarist ever, ran his ES-175 straight into the front of the house via a DI box. No amp, no preamp, just loving rawdogging it into the mixer lmao.

I’ve been wanting a baritone electric guitar for a while and I think I’ma get one. 30” scale seems silly but I have giant hands and play chords on a p-bass with 34” scale, so maybe not so wild after all. There are very large sounds I wanna make with this thing.

when my son was playing my bass the other day I noticed it’s a yamaha it defo needs new strings. literally the E string has snapped and isn’t there lmao. and an amp that can deliver some bass, so he can feel what he’s doing

the real actual answer is one of those little headphone jobbies, theyre great. or get like a little modeling pedal and just run it into a stereo or something
|

yeah. the headphone amp appeals cos it means he can just go wherever in the house without having to pick anything up

i have a really old zoom b2.1u bass multieffects unit where you basically plug in your headphones and get the amplified sound with some effects as well if you want. that thing is like 15 years old, so idk what the best thing to get nowadays is. something like this probably https://www.thomann.de/fr/zoom_b1four_bass_multi_effect.htm and you can just plug it into a real amp when you need to as well
