i wrapped up some stuff at the lab at work today. i noticed some buses have a partition in the front so people can't get too close to the driver. it was a nice day today but everything feels off. hope we don't get hit too hard.

i can't tell if people are panicking here in the bay area or not. like, most of the tech employers are having people work from home, so the traffic is much lighter, but everyone who is doing actual work seems to still be doing it. construction across the street still going, coffee shops are open and have people, restaurants are open, grocery stores have normal stock of most things except hand sanitizer, people are chatting in groups and out walking their dogs like it ain't no thing

they cancelled the loving nba though that has to mean something

lmao had a woman come in and tell us about how she’s going on like ten flights and we were like “look we literally have this one display mask you can have it”, it was an n95 style mask but she said “no i’m looking for the surgical kind” 🙄 jesus lady we haven’t at any masks for weeks, no one has

joining the wfh crew from tomorrow, no company mandate yet (probably because customer support & AML use Mac Minis and they don't want to let them take them home, not just yet ha) and instead this was used as an opportunity to force people to have to ask their line managers to approve WFH via this dumb HR tool we use

here in massachusetts, many suburban area schools are closed, but not inner city; most likely because many parents cannot afford child care. also all working class are forced to work (a lot of times in busy places), or be fired. a sad state of affairs, really. just wait another few weeks and things are going to become helpless, unless we slow the spread as much as we can

Broken Machine
Oct 22, 2010

it's difficult to stop the spread because a lot of people are asymptomatic while contagious for a week or more. what's going to be interesting is when cases reach critical mass and people start dying because we're out of ventilators (this is already happening in iran)

probably impossible to "stop" it, but slowing it is vital to have countries around the world actually be able to handle the massive influx of hospitalizations. many of Italy's best hospitals was filled to "200%" capacity, and they quickly ran out of the essentials to treat people who were at risk of dying (like a common respirator), which, in conjunction with the higher number of older people there, caused a larger number to die than should have

i watched macron's speech today but since my french is still poo poo i only understood about schools closing and employers encouraged to do wfh. on the streets there did not seem to be any change (yet) but then i only skipped across the street to the grocery store so maybe we will get toilet paper riots here as well shortly

do those 5 cent masks really do anything? i've heard it may help if you are contaminated by preventing the spread tiny particles of water from your mouth into the air, but it doesn't work the other way around. also i've heard the holes in those masks that allow you to breath are much too large to keep out any viruses floating around airborne.

e: antibiotics don't work for this coronavirus

from world health organization:

quote:

Are antibiotics effective in preventing and treating the new coronavirus?

No, antibiotics do not work against viruses, only bacteria.

The new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) is a virus and, therefore, antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment.

trying my remote desktop setup for if (when) we have to wfh and it turns out that theres a magic group policy option to enable something called RemoteFX that makes remote desktop do video streaming and our poo poo can run at a perfectly usable 30 fps through that

yet i was still told today that if we wfh we'd pretty much have to take our PCs home until they can get citrix running otherwise we would barely be able to work

i wonder if like not one single computer janitor in our entire 16k employee company knew about that RemoteFX stuff lol

(trying to make my xbox controller work through that makes my remote pc reboot tho, thx microsoft)

I’m more worried about the outbreaks of mumps, measles and rheumatic fever that seems to be spreading through this land. I’m not over 65 so I don’t really care about a contagious flu. I am more worried about god drat measles mumps and TB
