The IHME projections that Trump and co keep touting are so incredibly stupid. They have uncertainties that decrease with time, which is such obvious horseshit. It looks like they just have some simple model that predicts what the mean number of deaths per day is then applies a static percentage uncertainty to each number, so as you get to smaller numbers over time the uncertainties get really small too, which is just flat out wrong and not how you apply the uncertainties at all. The error is cumulative per day and so if you're uncertain at the beginning, you're going to be way off at the end. The correct thing to do, if you don't want to do any math, is to just do a monte-carlo, but that is very clearly not what they did. Why do I even do my job when I could apparently get away with pulling poo poo like this.

I was going to respond earlier with my usual pointless anecdotes about cars and instead I went outside and my wife was very upset because our 18 month old had walked down to the street while she had her back turned and almost got run over. like 3 steps into the other lane and would have gotten clobbered by a tow truck that didn’t even slow down. Sometimes you just get lucky. And no more toddlers in the front yard without eyes on, they move faster than you think so at least for today rotor, you changed my mind a bit 😁

One part of my job is actually to just make things up. I find a problem in a giant list of problems, look into how people are doing it now, think about how we can leverage what we do very well in a way that might be able to solve it, and then write a 15 page proposal about why the government should give me and my team money to try it out. The second part isn't about making things up though, it is about seeing if my crackpot idea can be a real thing and pouring over data that I've lost countless nights collecting to see if I'm just chasing a ghost. I have one grant that I'm pretty confident isn't going to work, and I'm going to have to flatly say that to our funding agency because I'm not a monster and I actually want to solve problems. I don't want to waste my life making things up just so I can make a fancy widget that is worse than the current one, I want to actually solve the problems that no one else has been able to solve. My boss is going to fight me; maybe if we phrase it correctly it will seem like there is still a chance; because he will want the additional funding to just keep trying, even though it isn't ever going to work. Apparently there is way more money that can be gotten much easier by just lying and solving nothing and making the world empirically worse off. It's honestly depressing as hell.

Some part of my brain is glitching out and making me shop for expensive poo poo I don't need. Booze, thousand dollar bongs, VR setups, computer parts, bike parts, guitars. I think capitalism wired my brain to just compulsively buy poo poo when I'm bored or lonely and the quarantine is making it super obvious. I haven't bought anything yet but it's becoming more and more noticeable.

Jonny 290 posted:modern 'farmers' are cosplaying and there is no reason for them to dress up in overalls and sit in an air conditioned $385k combine while it runs its GPS tracks. The family-owned farm I know has the farmer doing the following (they're 3 relatives, no employees, only family members helping): - beef production (that's their main gig) - got like half a dozen fields for different cereals and crops; they try to grow human-grade crops, but if the harvest is too bad, it becomes food for the cows - does some beekeeping and produces honey (and maple syrup!) on the side - is the local union rep for the union Essentially the mechanization just meant that rather than spending all his days tilling fields, he's now doing the work that many farms would have done before, for a similar amount of money. So while he's in the automated combine, he essentially reads agronomy papers, and participates in the farmers' equivalent of a stock market where they auction off/buy veal, cows & bucks, and various cereal futures (if it's worth his while to sell the crops and buy cheaper elsewhere), or handles the farm's finances. Then the rest of the spare time will include: drying grain, fixing equipment, dealing with the agronomy specialists and the related tasks (fertilizers, vaccinations, herbicides and pesticides), health tracking (and syncing with various veterinarians) and reproduction of his cows (tracking genetics, traveling with bucks to keep them diverse but in-line), and handling all of the related poo poo and maintenance. The thing he keeps saying (I offered to volunteer some farmhand time about a year ago) is "we don't need more people, we need money for more machinery", even if dude still works anywhere between 60-80 hours a week, more when frost is about to arrive and they gotta do everything now. He needs more fancy equipment and probably ways to turn his propane heating (and grain dryer) to a bio-gas generator since he'd avoid a lot of overheads there.

america has a permanent mental image of a "farmer" as a folger's commercial white guy in his 50s with wrinkled tan skin and piercing eyes who does stuff like kneel down and hand inspect small piles of harvested grain by rubbing them between his leathery hands and slowly smelling them
