the flip side is you should just leave the bad job instead of needing booze to get through the work day. And you'll get fatter

the only thing worse than a too boozy workplace is a workplace where they throw a party to celebrate a milestone or a tapeout and the boss pops the cap off a bubbling bottle of martinellis sparkling apple juice

by refusing to help people who have no one else to help them? i don’t know how to do that thanks to covid some people are in extremely difficult positions, and for better or for worse i’ve ended up in a position in the community where I am one of the few people others can ask for help, and my general rule is that if I can help someone, I will. also, lol, I am pathetic and do not have any self respect. not much anyway. my self esteem is entirely reliant on others. if anyone has some tricks on how to derive self esteem without external validation i’d love to know 🥵 echinopsis fucked around with this message at 07:29 on Mar 7, 2022 |

The recruiting poster philosophy ("If not you, then who?") still gives you great leeway to focus on self-care. Indeed, even if you wish to work on nothing but genuine charity, making your life's work actually sustainable is the best way to do that. Everyone loses when you burnout, and the solution to that is not "ignore that I'm burning out because people need me". Internalize this, and be happy taking your time and only helping where you genuinely can without overburdening yourself.

I will say this: you are at great risk of being taken advantage of. Some people really do need help and helping is good, but others will take advantage of your kindness. The most important thing is to learn to differentiate between them.

i read a thing about how the turbo rich were trying to move to a crypto standard so that inflation stops making their money worth less, and that they've been trying to do something like this since losing the gold standard i dont know enough about whatever this topic is to say if it was alarmist or real or what but it does explain crypto better than any other theories i have about it. I've previously been pretty confused as to how so many stupid people have enough money/financial security to "own" thousands of dollars of blockchain or whatever

Endless Mike posted:nope, ny state requires ny-based employers to withhold state taxes for nonresidents if they are performing a service within the state. there's some exceptions to it, but they mostly boil down to having a necessity to work from home or your home being a legitimate place of business for the company. I worked remotely for an NY based company and we would only hire remote in states where we had at least some existing business presence. It was mostly for avoiding establishing sales tax nexus in states we didn't have to, but it had the side effect that we could say you worked for that state's office and you didn't have to deal with NY state tax. It sucked though if you worked in the NY office and later decided to move out of state to work remote. At that point you fell under NY state's convenience clause and they could not stop withholding NY state tax.

i literally don't understand it but i think the idea is that if they could just own an amount of a limited currency that wouldn't grow or shrink they wouldn't need to put so much effort into investing maybe? i don't really have any intuition for how rich people think though (except for elon musk because i thought the exact same way when i was a fucken idiot 13 year old lol). I literally can't understand why anyone with more than 10 million dollars is motivated to do anything except chill and make art.

The ultimate goal of financialization is for wealth to just turn into more wealth all on its own, without having to do any of that messy stuff like "investing it into industries that actually do productive things for society"
