Our house was burglarized while we were out for the day and I called the cops and 2 showed up. One a regular cop and the other dude was the fingerprint guy. The regular cop was like “yeah this sucks when it happens” and recommended a stronger lock for the door. The fingerprint guy was like “this will take like two hours and we often don’t get a good match still want me to do it?” And I said “yes please check for prints” and he repeated the argument twice more cuz maybe it was quitting time? Anyway we got assigned a detective who said “robbers usually just pawn the dvds and jewelry at the nearest store I’ll go check” and he found about 70% of what was stolen thanks for reading my cop story

I sympathise. Some people broke into my house while I was home and it was completely peaceful and they just left once they realised I was there but I was still jumping at noises around the house for months.

Thirding on the experience and the aftermath. I was washing dishes after letting a cat out and a couple folks let themselves in my front door, grabbed my wife’s purse and my PS4, and then drove off with both our cars. We got my car back that day thanks to the in-car GPS, and my wife’s back a week later thanks to ... I guess the cops wanting impound money?

Anyway I had to buy a new PS4, my insurance went up, I make sure to lock the door after I let the cat out, and the cops didn’t need any loving guns for that. Also they never dusted for prints. But I don’t really care because prison wouldn’t fix anything, I just want the folks to pay for my deductible and PS4.

ACAB.

I am 100% certain that I have read this exact story on these very forums, yet police suck so badly and so consistently that I cannot be sure whether you’ve posted this before, or if this is just the universal experience for people who need help from the police after break-ins.

I suppose it could be both.

My brother got stabbed in the neck by some rear end in a top hat on the street, and two bike cops showed up within minutes. But by then the stabbing was over, the crowd was holding the dude who did it, and someone had already called an ambulance for the people who got hurt. And even then I'll give the bike cops credit; they picked up on that almost immediately and one lead some people to help clear the street and flag down the ambulance, while the other checked on the attacker and collected witness statements. It was a glimpse at what could replace police, first responders who can walk into a situation and manage it, not dominate it.

Well don't you know I'm caught in a trap?

A few years back I had a couple dudes smash my car window, and start rifling through my car, I chased them away down the street, nice sunny afternoon, so the neighborhood was all out on their porches, called the cops pretty quick.

The dudes just kinda ambled down the street, kicking and punching cars, knocking over trashcans, shouting, etc.

Cops show up, dudes start yelling at them, a second cruiser shows up, with an obviously older/higher ranking cop, first two cops (one black and one white cop, and one black and one white dude, fwiw) engage the dudes, start talking to them, get both of them to sit down in the grass, cuff the white dude, ambulance shows up to take the black dude away, no cuffs but with a cop riding along.

Cops explain to us dudes got bounced from the nearby shelter for being wasted, probably causing a ruckus so they'll get a night in jail, food etc. they're booking the white dude, but the black dude is having a rough time so he's going to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

Seems to me about how law enforcement should work, the cops certainly didn't need to be armed, and at no point did they yell, much less use violence, they basically acted as social workers responding to a 911 call.

I know my anecdote isn't typical, and is horribly damming of a system that needs to be rectified, but having an unarmed police force that only gets to get dressed up and play army man when the next psycho right winger holes himself up in a bell tower with a cache of rifles seems like a good first step.

EDIT: He's also pretty open with his political beliefs (they're pretty good), but really I think the main thing is just that he's out, proud, and nobody can 'put him in his place' because he's just a TERRIFYINGLY good player.
