You don't have to 8e a good person to 8e a hero.
One of the things that tips the balance towards “yeah, the centaurs raped Umbridge” is that Rowling studied Classics at University, so she knows drat well what the implication is even if the average reader doesn’t.

That, and her weird obsession with sexual assault infesting her writing (see also: the Comoran Strike books) only becoming more apparent as time goes on.

Yeah I figured there are various levels of portrait you can make, which is why Dumbledore on a trading card Harry finds in a candy box just smiles and waves, meanwhile the formal posthumous portrait of Dumbledore that sits in the Headmaster office can carry on a full conversation and had enough knowledge of the ridiculously convoluted defeat Voldemort plan that it could give Snape directions.

Yeah it probably depends on how well the artist captures the "essence" of the subject

That reminds me of something I've always wondered about : How sentient are the various pictures and paintings in the Harry Potter universe. Like. is the paining of Dumbledore how he have to spend his afterlife or is it a different version of him?
Rowling actually answered that! As part of her giant Pottermore lore dump, of course, not in the books. Basically portraits have limited sentience, and their personalities are based on how the portrait's artist saw them. Except the headmaster portraits, which are painted at the beginning of the headmaster's tenure, and which they program over time to act more like them.

JK Rowling posted:

Some magical portraits are capable of considerably more interaction with the living world. Traditionally, a headmaster or headmistress is painted before their death. Once the portrait is completed, the headmaster or headmistress in question keeps it under lock and key, regularly visiting it in its cupboard (if so desired) to teach it to act and behave exactly like themselves, and imparting all kinds of useful memories and pieces of knowledge that may then be shared through the centuries with their successors in office.
So the paintings are separate magical constructs, not mini Horcruxes or whatever.

Well the third movie ends with him in an ambiguous place where he's dying but nothing gets resolved. So safe to say if a fourth movie does happen then Credence will have died off screen.

It's pretty funny that Credence died at the end of the first film and neither of the scenes they shot explaining that he came back made it into the movies.

It's also funny how he did absolutely nothing of consequence after he was brought back. Dumbledore (,Albus) easily defeats his Obscurial power in the new movie so I guess that was a big bag of nothing.

I'm just glad Rowling doesn't care about the paintings all that much, or else we'd probably get some new detail about how wizard paintings are made by mixing the paint with the subject's bodily fluids or something.

The weird thing is that didn't Ezra Miller's first arrest happen either a few days before or during FB3's release? It doesn't seem like there was enough time for WB to decide to edit out some of his scenes and minimize his role in the movie; That subplot was just that sloppily tacked on.

That just means they're a Johnny Depp fan (read into that whatever you want) not necessarily a Fantastic Beasts fan.

I haven't seen any of the Fantastic Beasts movies, but I gotta say even if there weren't very credible accusations of domestic violence against Johnny Depp, Mads Mikkelsen has to be an upgrade, especially as a gay nazi wizard.

Yeah Mads carries around a stupendous amount of sexy energy and Hannibal showed that he can employ that very well for people who wants to see gay characters who aren’t explicitly gay, I.e. JK Rowling.

James Somerton did a good video on the latest Fantastic Beasts film (and the franchise and Rowling as a whole). I also really liked his earlier video about his disillusionment with Rowling over the years.
As much as his analysis of Trump's supporters inability to see/understand the "Truth" is typical US liberal wankery and really not about Harry Potter, his point on the heroes and the villains and their pro-change switcheroo between HP and FB, and Rowling's support of a even more homophobic line are pretty spot on. "I am a billionaire now so change will cost me money!"

Yeah, Johnny Depp used to be one of my favorite actors but his schtick hasn't been appealing since maybe the 3rd Pirates movie. He really only has one mode and it's just not appealing anymore. I'll literally write off movies that have Johnny Depp in them entirely based on his presence.

Mads Mikkelsen steals the show in anything he's in, by contrast.

I haven't seen it but apparently Depp does a much more serious and menacing villain in Waiting for the Barbarians than his usual unconventional character roles. Agreed though that Mads is a much better casting choice

Yeah up until around Pirates 2 Depp in a film was a reason to watch it, then it quickly turned into a reason not to.

Even if the movie does okay, the enthusiasm in general just seems really low, even among Harry Potter fans who tune out everything but the series itself.

BigglesSWE
Dec 2, 2014

I mean I think the second movie really soured the enthusiasm big time, because it cemented just how short sighted the creative decision clearly are in this particular series. Clarence, the boy who was literally blown to pieces in the first movie? Yeah he’s back, no idea how. Here’s an assistant that fawns over Newt and is never brought back again. Jacob remembers things now! How? Dunno, maybe Queenie broke through somehow, not the biggest leap I guess but also Queenie is using the imperius curse on him, which the other books established is a very nasty thing to do.

The first movie, while certainly flawed, was pretty enjoyable to me. All the core characters were charming, there was a decent amount of fun to be had with the animals. It was really the insistence to make a bigger more serious story revolving Grindelwald that pulled it down, and the second one quadrupled down on that, including child murder. The jig was up at that point I felt, there’s no way the third movie would be less grandiose and “epic”.
