i never asked for this
thanks to all the talk here I started up fo4 on ps4 a few weeks ago and I’m doing stealth pistols build. I always play just like rifle guy with random stats and not much thought so this is a pretty fun build. I only get a few hours a night to play so it’s pretty good to explore and do a quest or 2.

I also skipped all the settlement poo poo immediately because that’s what I bounced on back when the game launched.

I see The Outer Worlds is out of its one-year EPIC lockup and on Steam now, "launching" for 1/2 price as well. Is it really as 'Fallout but in space' as I keep seeing in user reviews?

Outer Worlds is painfully mediocre. It's one of those games that's somehow worse than a bad game because you can see the potential and what the devs were going for. I had 5 hours of fun messing around with it but don't get your hopes up.

I'm rebuilding my 98SE system for James, and the way I figure it is I only need FAT32 partitions for DOS games since the "DOS" you can boot to under 98 can handle it, but if I ever need to boot to an earlier version of DOS off diskettes or whatever, I'll need a FAT16 partition to access anything?

i feel like it'd be easier to just use a SDcard to IDE interface and just have different SD cards for old DOS, new DOS, Win9x games

then you could also take an image of the SDcard so that if win9x ever eats itself you can just restore the image and immediately get back to it being fresh and (relatively) stable

i got it ages ago (it’s been developed for a very long time) but i have the same problem as most other nethack/dungeon crawl stone soup-likes*. it’s kind of dense up front and i just easily bounce off of it. it seems worse for caves of qud somehow, like i wander to the first place and get half my health bar deleted by the first enemy i see then just give up. for like stone soup i can murder things for a few floors at least before dying a painful death but the few times ive played qud it seems to be a bigger cliff i have to scale to get out. that could just be me missing the right way to play though.

not to say you won’t like the game, i think it’s just a personal hang up.

what i don’t like is that the sessions last longer than the modern rogue-lite games like slay the spire or hades, etc. a game of qud or stone soup might be 8 hours or something, so i just don’t feel like getting invested because failure is inevitable. it’s more palatable to me if it’s half an hour or an hour to failure rather than like 4 hours.

the thing i like about hades/slay the spire is it condenses the drafting aspect: constructing a build out of the pieces made available, then getting shuttled to various tests of the build you’ve made. in those you’re constantly making decisions on how to proceed and it branches very fast.

i think stuff like qud or stone soup trades the streamlined gaminess for a significantly deeper but more complicated, slower, and non-linear experience. which sounds nice but ive never managed to invest enough time to actually get to that point.

*i guess “roguelike” is the proper term, but i think that’s come to mean randomized games with “builds”, so to me they’re now nethack-likes or stone soup-likes.

the only roguelikes I've gotten into are moria, nethack, and tangledeep. I didn't play tangledeep as much as it deserves but that's due to time issues.

I see "roguelite" a lot for "games with some combination of randomness, builds, and run-ending failure states" but I agree that "roguelike" is way overused. tangledeep is the first game I'd call a roguelike that has proper graphics and controls that clicked with me. otherwise I'd rather just use vim keys to move the @ around

lol I've been playing nethack for at least 20 years and I've never ascended. I always get bored and start yolo-ing things which isn't a great started when you do indeed only live once. maybe I don't actually like nethack as much as I thought if I get bored and effectively suicide so many games
