Startide Rising was the book that got me into sci fi. Too bad about the second trilogy though.

For the thread: Transporters were never supposed to be in ST. The original plan was to have the Enterprise or whatever ships just land on planets, but that would've been too expensive with models and sets, and when it came time to film the pilot, the shooting model of the shuttle wasn't ready, so they came up with transporters, which cost next-to-nothing. So, that's why every writer for ST has to come up with some reason that the transporters, which would easily solve whatever problem, won't do that this time.

Also remember when they used the transporter to de-age Dr. Pulaski and then forgot about and never told anyone about the loving FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH effect you get by messing around with some sliders in the transporter settings. We could probably come up with dozens of galaxy-transforming technological leaps made by rerouting and re configuring systems that never get brought up again.

Yeah, because the Federation has a Temporal Prime Directive that says you're not allowed to go back in time and change the past.

Not that this stops Voyager from violating it at least twice per season.

I get the impression with DS9's time travel episodes that the Prophets are actually pretty good at arranging time travel stuff with relatively few paradoxes, though not necessarily great.

TAS also has Yesteryear where the Guardian of Forever is happily assisting Starfleet with historical expeditions, but accidently retcons Spock out of existence and has to set it right.

It was more a joke about the bluntness with which the show occassionally brings up philosophers up Hegel. I also feel like any show like SAC has a real dialectic going in every episode for the characters but thats not intentional in my joke.

There he goes.

Jet Alone could have killed at least two of the Angels on its own sans any AT field. The main reason it got sabotaged though was because if it worked humanity could have dealt with the reason why the Angels were attacking without putting themselves at risk/letting the background scheme percolate

I do not think Jet Alone could have won under the conditions of the death cult wanted to play the game, but given they do kill some angels sans any discussion of AT fields or via "convential" weaponry rather than barrier contact its possible they could have made it work.

What Im saying is the entire rebuild series should be dumpstered and we get an alternate timeline series where Jet Alone works and steals the funding.

I don't think Jet Alone is mobile or versatile enough to even have taken down the angels that were defeated purely by weapon fire. Its only confirmed ability is lumbering forward. Now if, IF, Jet Alone was presented as a half-way plausible alternative that would have added a lot of depth. Not having an AT field means any angel would just melt JA if it gets too close or even manages to present a threat.

Okay, okay, jokes aside: yes, there's some massive hubris going on with the JA team. That said, I can't help but feel like letting JA get crumped by an Angel and then following up by defeating the Angel with Evas would be an even more effective way to show that JA isn't the way forward, and yet they still resorted to sabotage.

Barudak

I don't think they can predict Angel attacks that accurately, and even if they could the whole point would be to demo this thing in a non emergency time period. As lumbering and stupid as it is, it could concievably have wrecked one of the upcoming angels which has the distinction of being the only one taken down by the standard gun Evas are equipped with.

Also this episode occurs before the thing the death cult needs is transferred to them, its possible if they lose funding they don't get that item. Hell maybe it gets destroyed instead since humans think they don't need it anymore and as an attempt to stop the angels.

Something else to keep in mind is the people in charge of Jet Alone also make a claim an artificial AT field is in the works. How true that is is never seen, but again, if you want your death cult ending to happen you surely don't want money spent on successfully building a counter to your endgame.

I mean they weren't totally wrong about an artificial AT field countermeasure, maybe the Jets Alone could have been armed with Lance of Longinus knockoffs.

Barudak
May 7, 2007

Jet Together, surely?

But yes, by the end of the series they have extremely potent artificial AT piercing weaponry, but the question would be (since its not super clear) when those were completed and if they could have survived whatever assaults until those were ready.

It'd obviously be extremely different but it'd be an interesting what-if where humans decide to go with Jet Alone and finish off Adam only to discover Angels keep going for the Tokyo 3 base as they scramble to make Jet Alone fully functional while dealing with the competing Evas and whatever the back-up plot would be by the Zoom Meeting of Doom

Theoretically all but two maybe three of the angels could have been killed with nukes. It's shown that a single nuke (or equivalent) are strong enough break the AT fields of most and render it disabled and near dead for hours or days at a time. You really just have to be willing to keep dropping nukes after the first until theres nothing left. Sure you might wipe out humanity from the nuclear fallout thus defeating the purpose, but at least you can give a middle finger to the doomsday conspiracy and their magic robots with good ol' nuclear power, the working mans doomsday.

Yeah, N2 mines are explicitly no fallout, and how they work is never said in show, so just insert your own personal biblical nonsense technobable here.

On the note of stupid tech in Evangelion, the tiny dingy they put in the blood sea in central dogma. NERV has the budget for a graveyard of failed mechas, a geofront base, a city inhabited entirely by expensible specialists to make it work 24/7 and they gotta use a repurposed fishing boat to go inspect the god they keep locked up in their basement. The thing has one cheap rope mooring it, what the hell, this is where you cut costs?

They state that they only have a few dozen in the world. It gets brought up because in the episode with the shadow angel they bring up my "use more than one bomb" strategy in desperation and plan to launch the whole worlds supply to take it out. Which of course would be bad because they're the only thing they have that can delay the Angels long enough for the pilots to learn dance choreography and they'll have used them all to kill just one. Hence why in our hypothetical non-eva scenario you'd have to resort to using good old fashioned nukes pretty quickly. And to bring this topic full circle the Jet Alone is essentially a nuke on legs, so you can still have you're giant robots in our nuke'em scenario.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if part of the Evangelion timeline included nuclear disarmament at some point.

They used N2 bombs in the war before the series, I thought. So it seemed less nuclear disarmament and more people felt comfy using the hell out of N2 bombs since no radiation so stockpiles naturally transitioned.

This is actually an issue in lots of post-apocalyptic settings, Eva included. What happens with all the nukes lying around. Sure you've got the nuclear war ones like Fallout where they were presumably all used to cause the aforementioned apocalypse, but what about all the ones caused by viruses, meteors, zombies, etc? That's a poo poo ton of nukes lying around with everyone supposed to be guarding them dead.

Let's not forget the ones in places like Pakistan or North Korea. I can imagine some Immortan Joe type bandit leader unearthing one, not even because he plans to use it, just because having a nuclear warhead on display in front of his Thunderdome would be a big prestige boon in front of the other warlords.
