You have to just make a new one, no respec in the game.

Also in terms of essential skills I found that the only ones you really need are Lockpicking, Nerd Stuff and Mechanics.

Toaster Repair rewards are a bit :effort: this time around (though they will eventually get you the 3rd best armor set in the game and a fun easter egg) and you can always just create a character with 10 and do a sweep through the game.

Sneaky poo poo rarely comes up and only really lets you avoid a few fights or get the drop on some random encounters.

Survival only lets you skip all random encounters reliably which is pretty worthless imo.

Hard/Kiss rear end are okay and can be worth investing in but they mostly just let you skip some fights.

First aid has like...3 checks in the game, none of which are that important. Otherwise just get your dudes to level 1 so they can use the good medpacks.

Animal Whisperer is insanely brokenly good since it lets you get animals for each person you have it on as well as two extra animals that don't take up an animal slot. I had it on literally every Ranger to some degree (not all of them need anywhere near full investment) and it trivialized a lot of the game to have 8 more characters with 8 times my Ranger's HP running around and also dealing a ton of damage. However its only a combat skill, it has no use outside of combat.

Armor/Weapon Modding are easily done by just making a character you buff with them and leaving them at base.

You can have an absolute maximum of 15 following you at once if you know how to grab them which is just hilarious and deeply frustrating to play with. Its better to just have like 4-5 which doesn't gently caress with AI or pathfinding much.

Also, as a warning, you don't want to invest in Animal Whisperer deeply on any of the static companions. Late in the game past the point of no return there's an event that kicks all non-created Rangers out of your party for a minute and you lose all the pets that were following them even if you immediately put them back in. It screwed me out of the Billy and Jean achievement :(

finished the game and liked it quite a bit despite all the bugs and crashes and long load times and the fact that Angela's path is so clearly the wrong one that I'm wondering if I'm missing something. Like the Patriarch is a shithead but Angela's plan is just awful

I think I'll give it another go in a year or two when the bugs have been ironed out and the DLC is out

Oh gently caress.... I thought maybe they died and wondered how my honey badger died and Major Tom didn't. That sucks.... no way to get past it and you lose your pets for good? Where is the exact point? Can I go back to the farm and get Billy and Jean after? Still irritated I lost Polly and then the patch comes out to buff him as this is my "take my time" run.

Also can anyone verify if the AI/Machine Commune ending is still glitched?

edit:
Also trying for my Pyro and Explosive guy this build...and I'm fairly close
Explosives 10
Big Guns 10
Toaster 8
Mechanics 8
Got a hat that gives +1 mechanics and +toaster and two trinkets for +1 to toaster or mech. I mostly leave on the mech unless I find a toaster. Perks are all about building my explosive and flame damage. I'm gimmicking the hell out of it but on my faster run came really close so hoping this time I make it. If I remember the end minigun is 10 bg but other than that I don't remember anything gating it. I'm 15 and sitting at 6 so far so I can max my mech at 10 (well 8 but with + gear its 10) and explosives at 10 for increased boom radius. Think I can make it to 10 BG by 25? Toaster and Mech 8 and 10 explosives are my primary goals.

I haven't had tooo many bugs but this one blows. My cybernetically enhanced main guy who's read like 3-4 skill books had his skills reset when swapping him in and out of a squad. Reloading any save doesn't fix this. He has like 3 skill points at level 20.

Apparently this only happens when you swap your two original characters, so, just avoid that I guess.

I had fought one Scorp in the north before. When I met the guy in the south, I had to fight him three times, and each time was a slightly different series of Sneaky poo poo challenges, until finally I wasn't given an option to do Sneaky poo poo and had to use Nerd Stuff instead.

Honestly it doesn't do as much damage as my ripper with the explosive mod. On my 10 explosive ranger and the gun kitted out I can reliably do 1000 damage every burst. Every enemy he looks at just explodes into mist. I just have to give him leadership now.

I gave Scotchmo the special armor from Toaster Repair and a minigun after Cordite left taking power armor, the Nidhogg, and my mechanic utility item. Taking the utility item is what really pissed me off and what better revenge then an invincible drunk hobo with a minigun.

Ok..... thank you. <Whew> Major Tom only counts to the limit if I dismiss him right? I'll swap B&J to my main Ranger. Still will lose my Badger tho...although I thought Piper the Sniper stuck around. Doesn't she stick around for the final battle? I immediately started another game as I wanted to take my time.

So more build talk... guys are at 15-16 so far. Like in my edit above I got my Explosives/Flame/Mech Dude at end build (hopefully barring math) at Boom 10 BG 10 Mech 8 Toaster 8 Weird Science 6-8 with a +2 mech or Toaster bonus depending on gear/trinket

Melee Dude 10 Melee 10 Lock and.... like 4 hard rear end 2 SA and 3 sneak.... trying to decide what to buff now. Not hard rear end as I dont want to avoid fights

Poindexter Leader with 10 FA 10 Nerd 10 6 auto 4 AW and 6 leader but this time I want to try and decide what other two skills to max since Poindexter.

Sniper Piper has max AW and Sniper
Marshall has Kiss rear end and Sneak
Lucia is barter and SA
So my main three customs: the pyro boom mech has a full plate but the others still got some room. Any ideas? I didn't see Weird Science being essential but I want a completionist run this time. Poindexter means 4 skill trees so was thinking about auto for the end game assault rifle or smg and maybe AW so I can keep the badger if Piper won't stay.

New Vegas had some insanely good voice actors in general. The Survivalist easter egg quest was so drat good. As far as talking to the Burned Man about his faith. I was sad when I couldn't ask more about it or even join. I know this sounds weird but as much as I'm completely dismissive of religion in real life, I actually always enjoy faith and religion in games. Paladins and Clerics are my fantasy go to. Major Tom never takes up an animal slot as long as you recruit him while you have another one already following you.

You can do the same with Polly exactly twice. The first time you recruit him if you pay the $500 bucks he'll follow. You can also pass an Animal Whisperer 7 check to force him to follow a character if you then dismiss him in addition to another animal.

After that though if you dismiss him again re-recruiting him is impossible except through the normal animal interface so he'll take up a slot.

Also if you get the Cyber Chicken reward companion it works the same way, attaching itself to your first slot Ranger regardless of how many animals you already have following. However you can't dismiss it or re-recruit it and it takes up a slot so you're locked in once you pick it up (you get it during the base assault if you find the four Cyborg Chickens around Colorado Springs and bring them back to the coop before that)

The way the animal followers work is wild and has a ton of weird and arbitrary rules!
