It's mostly because Donnie/JD are running an objectively terrible campaign. Today, JD hosed up a campaign stop at a Pittsburgh sandwich shop because his advance team didn't bother to contact the store and the shift manager freaked out and temporarily banned everyone from coming in. Also, Donnie's Big New Thing today was a gloom-and-doom racist rant at a Wisconsin rally where he called Kamala "mentally impaired and mentally disabled" (linked earlier) while declaring that he wasn't owned (also linked earlier!). Just basic poo poo that generates negative headlines (even with a heavy dose of NYT-style sanewashing). If Donnie wins, it will be in spite of his campaign, not because of it.

As the child of rural school teachers, I can tell you that the schools are at the mercy of psychotic, arrogant, selfish and ignorant parents (don't worry they also make up the school boards) and they retired 20 years ago, I can't imagine how bad it is now. We're hosed is what I'm trying to say

Isn't the problem more suburban educated/mostly educated shitheads with jacked up F-250s with obnoxious accessories* pretending they're rural when they're far closer to the Getting-drunk-at-sports-bar-in-strip-mall-just-off-the-interstate sort? I went to school in a very rural area in VA, which at the time was top 10 in public education in the US. For me, It just reinforces that there are good and bad rednecks. Schools were well funded and staffed, had a vo-tech program for welding and car, computer, and HVAC repair. Had a few oddball teachers, some in a good way. You weren't expected to go to college because there wasn't one within a 2 hour drive. Everyone in my age group just wanted to get that HS diploma, turn 18, and get the gently caress out of that small town hell. Farming and tourism were the only jobs that existed, it was kinda a rich area full of poor folks like me and everyone around me. I'm really glad I grew up before the camera phone era.... Unsupervised redneck teenagers in the woods with access to guns and farm equipment equals soooooo many technical felonies that would be life ruining if they wound up on YouTube like they would these days. Half the dudes in my highschool were volunteer firefighters because there was simply nothing else to do.

Several other members of his upper-middle class Alabama family are the same-still voting for downballot R's but can't stand Trump. E: several of my under 40 cousins there have had the same swing. All went to college but run the gamut from doctors and lawyers to public school teachers and foresters, and they all voted trump in 2020 but I don't think they will this time. They're far from liberal, but all the culture war stuff that plays well 75 year olds just backfires on them, from immigration to LGBTQ to abortion stuff. They're mad at biden for inflation want lower taxes and hate a welfare queen and they sure aren't voting for Harris, but they just want trump to go away.
