Yes, as compared to the dems who cut off the primary threat once AOC pulled it off. Its wild how hard the 'primary-from-the-left' strategy was strangled in the womb. The progressive 2016-19 alumni had a few winners and a lot of unviable losers. Its frustrating that the mechanisms for pulling leftwards nationally are a lot more feeble compared to the social forces giving us Two Black Hitlers. Go to your county democratic conventions, take all your friends, and start snowballing up the delegate ladder if you wanna change the party rules.

Yeah I disagreed that there's still a "they" that can cut off an insurgent Democrat that wants to primary a moderate in a safe district like AOC did. There are books (lol I ain't reading) about how tenuous the democratic party's left alliance with the democratic party's center / center-left is holding up. The motivating factor is still "just win baby" and if democratic primary voters think the candidate won't win the general, they'll back off. Republicans don't, they nominate their most extremes, leading to like ~10 democratic senate wins that they had no business winning in the last decade. Alabama sent a fuckin democratic senator to Congress for a while because the Republican was such a freak! A good example is the Nebraska Senate race. The democrats in the state outright decided "eh, our candidate can't win here" so there isn't even a Democrat on the ballot for that seat. The result is a current 45%-45% tie where at a minimum, a Republican incumbent has to spend a shitload of money to defend against the independent running on a "gently caress you, politicians suck, and I'm a union leader vote for me" platform. A bad example is the entire New York Democratic Party. gently caress them.

So, I'm part of an insigent progressive group of about 20 precinct representatives in my red county's democratic party. This year we ran one of us who is on the executive commmittee for chair to replace the current chair who thinks that it's still 1985 and we should go knock on doors and get invited in for coffee to talk about candidates. We showed the chair how to segment a mailing list and she looked at it like sorcery and then decided that no, all mailers should go to everyone. We have about 50 precincts, and of that group of 50, maybe 20 show up for the average meeting. When it came time to vote for our progressive person for party chair, every loving boomer precinct person showed up to vote us down. People I've never seen before. One dude literally in a wheelchair with an oxygen bottle. We lost. The "they" is the goddam boomers, and like most things in this country, I don't think anything will change till the reaper is done with them.

There isn't a shadowy cabal of democratic bigwigs rigging rules or whatever when there's an AOC brewing, boomers just show up when it's time to put down the people demanding better than what they have. Accordingly, there has been a shift in the subgroup demographics in polling, with Democrats starting to outperform Republicans for people older than 55 as aging Republican boomers die out.

So that is more or less how my county democratic party is in my slightly red county. Edit: my candidate had 2 fundraisers that were promoted on social media only. Those old fucks camp out on the local clubs Facebook pages so they were well aware of the fundraisers. BUT since we didn't send out mailers for those fundraisers they did not show up and then posted on Facebook that we were "lazy". Both of them had very low turnout. Issue with our local dems is they cannot stop doing the most petty of loving crimes. I'm talking like running off with a few hundred dollars gotten during a minor political event. From what I understand it was a decisive factor in why the 'red wave' of 2022 turned out to be a red puddle? The GOP voters weren't there any more. I haven't seen much analysis about it, but it's another datapoint to "the Republican base is out of its mind" thesis. It's a bit like the analysis of Kamala doing rallies trumpeting former Donnie staffers and the Cheneys. That heavily annoys the lefties, that then say "wtf there are no never-Trump Republican voters anymore, who is this endorsement for?" Said lefties are factually correct, as there are no never-Trump Republican voters up for grabs anymore. The problem is that they're spiritually incorrect - those never-Trump Republicans are just called Democrats (or independents) now. Probably saw too many of their friends fall victim to COVID conspiracies, scams, and Donnie Cats. Now the Red Wave prediction stuff was just due to really bad partisan polling. Even now, there are supposedly Republican polling firms shoving out polls that cost a grand total of $475 to make, all to show false momentum, which leads to money going to the wrong places.

The treasurer is usually the weakest link, sadly. Not that other positions don't have their own brands of corruption but the former has it the easiest. On a grand scale I'm wary of anyone that wants to be on top of the hierarchy, on a local level I'm wary of anyone that is excited about handling the cash box.
