I think I need Moo Deng to help me because I'm having trouble getting a mail-in ballot sent to me. I became a naturalized citizen ~2 years ago and I'm registered to vote, and I can log in to the state website where it shows that I'm registered to vote, but when I go to request a mail-in ballot it just blanks like I don't exist in the system. Not sure what the deal is, I have a long and complicated foreign-sounding name though so maybe someone misspelled it when they did data entry, wouldn't be the first time.

Almost all of the girls I went to grad school with were Chinese or Indian. All the Chinese girls renamed themselves, some took normal names like Emma, or Jaqueline, others more unique names like Yolonda, or Estrella, but quite a few names themselves random objects or male names, like Echo, Bench, Alan, and Stephen. At first I thought the super weird names were them just trying to get close to an English word since some of the girls had fairly similar given names to their chosen American names (Han to Hannah, Jingwin yo Jaqueline), but no they were completely random.

The Indian girls didn’t give a gently caress and kept their given names and would kindly tell you you’re an idiot if you couldn’t pronounce it.

I would love it if the western world got back to naming people after common things and activities instead of acting like names have to be unique words that can't mean anything else. We've been ripping off Roman names for thousands of years with increasingly weird accents on them and then you go look up the source material and it's like, oh, the dictatorship of 221BCE was held by General Fifth Biggest Bean, also known as "Pokey" for short

The election is just around the corner, but that imminence hasn't really set in yet... I guess it's a good thing that I'm not super anxious about it, just surprising as, intellectually, I recognize the dire consequences of Trump returning to office and the apparent even odds of it. But his campaign has been so bumbling that I think the prospect just doesn't feel real to me.

Which itself does trigger some light anxiety because that's exactly where I was in 2016 and we all saw how that turned out. At least Kamala isn't Hillary.

It's been a crazy, compacted campaign season because Biden dropped out on July 21st, less than three months ago. Most presidential campaigns are like a year long!

Also, in terms of the polling, things are wackier than they seem: https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/06/upshot/polling-methods-election.html

A non-paywalled recap: most pollsters, including good ones, are weighting based on recalled vote history. That's been bad historically, as people are more likely to say they voted for the winner, even if they didn't (or they forgot). So you could have an accurate Biden +4 representative sample that reported as Biden +10 when you got them on the phone, because Voters, leading to the pollster shifting that sample to Biden +4.

The pollsters are kinda throwing up their hands because they don't think they're correct weighting on recalled vote history, but they haven't found anything better yet.

So, polls can't really tell us poo poo unless they're like consistently +10 in a direction.

Donnie was in Detroit (and poo poo all over it), so naturally he yammered on about the Man Of The Year thing again:

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/10/us/politics/trump-man-of-year.html

Trump Says He Was ‘Man of the Year.’ His Source Says It Isn’t True.

Fact-checkers have found no evidence over the years that former President Donald J. Trump once received the honor in Michigan.

quote:

“This was long before — many years before I ran for president, maybe 18 or 20 years ago,” Mr. Trump told the Detroit audience, referring to the supposed man-of-the-year honor. In response to the Times story, he said that he had instructed his staff to find proof that he really did win the long-ago award. “It was like 19 years ago. It was a long time. But I was honored. And guess what? They found it. I was.”

At that point, Mr. Trump pulled out of his coat pocket a printout of a story from the Oakland Press, a local newspaper. “So here’s your article right here,” he said holding it up for the crowd. Then he read the headline out loud: “Oakland County G.O.P. to Honor Donald Trump: Former president to speak at upcoming Lincoln Day fund-raising dinner.”

But the article that he held up was not about some honor 18 or 20 years ago, long before he ran for president, as he had just told the audience. Instead, it was about a party dinner where he was to speak in June 2023, at which his Republican hosts planned to declare him “Man of the Decade.” This took place long after Mr. Trump began making his claim about having been Michigan’s man of the year as long as two decades ago.

The original Oakland Press article did refer to the 2013 dinner and incorrectly said that Mr. Trump had been named man of the year then. But after Mr. Trump held up the article on Thursday, the news outlet deleted that from the article and appended an editor’s note saying that was wrong. “He was not honored as Man of the Year,” the editor’s note said.

“We’re setting the record straight,” the editor’s note continued, “after the former president incorrectly cited the 2013 Man of the Year award during a recent speech to the Detroit Economic Club.”

I say again that if he wins, it won't be because of his campaigning. Zero-to-negative votes won by this kind of thing again.
