Only way some loser man got a wife would be by war and conquest. Assigning war widows of a dominated culture to conquerors is a good way to transfer wealth and land to the new dominate culture. Yeah the divorce wave of the 80s was the divorce taboo finally lifting and lots of people escaping unhappy marriages because prior to like, gen xers, getting married was an expected part of entering adulthood, instead of its current status of being the capstone on an already established stable long term relationship (ideally). "slave" might have oversold it but tremendous social pressure to pair off under duress resulted in a lot of lovely dudes having a relationship where they would not if women were free to choose other wise. Incels are the dudes who 'missed out' on the era whereas the aging boomers complaining about their wives are the tail end of the previous era.
