spanish (and by extension what you'll see in most of latin america) naming conventions are to use both the mother and the father's family names, probably most commonly hyphenated. in the most traditional sense, the omission of the father's would indicate an unrecognized child, though I guess the modern practice in such cases is to just give the kid both of the mother's names.
