Stu Rothenberg of Inside Elections is saying similar things with background information (and he's not bullshitting) and even with the mega-GOP +5% numbers out of Nevada, Jon Ralston isn't calling the race with roughly 60% of the vote already in. The campaigns are just in the dark because of all the Republicans switching to mail/early and all the Democrats switching back to election day. Nobody knows how much of the mail/early vote is from voters that normally would / would've shown up on election day, even if they were new voters. The trouble is that means people are reverting to their 2016 habits when everyone is attempting to model a 2020 electorate. So like at this time in 2020 Democrats were +46 in Pennsylvania early vote, because Republicans were yelling MAIL VOTE IS FRAUD. Now, Democrats are only +23. Significant? Who knows! And usually the campaign doing stupid, flashy stunts is the losing campaign. But, Donnie has always loved stupid, flashy stunts, even when he won in 2016 (which he thought he was losing). Significant? Who knows! SIM TO END GODDAMNIT

The thing that I wonder about, and the reason I think trying to read anything into early voting stats is dumb, is the defection rate. The only thing early vote stats tell us is how many registered republicans/democrats/indies have voted. But it sure seems like a lot more registered republicans are dissatisfied with Trump than there are democrats who are dissatisfied with Harris, not to mention the possibility that independents could swing very heavily in one direction more than the other. Even if republicans are "voting more", if a large majority of independents, and even a small portion of republicans, go for Harris that would have some pretty massive implications once they actually start counting the votes.

Personally, I think a huge contingent of middle aged married women are going to pay lip service to trump socially but then actually pull the lever for Harris where nobody can see because Roe was a huge loving deal and they're done with trusting hubby knows best. Throw in a bunch of pissed off motivated Puerto Ricans and I'm.... Vaguely Confident the orange one will lose. I'm much less confident about a peaceful transfer of power in January

I'm just hoping the MAGA folks don't literally kill people at the polls or engage in widespread destruction of ballots or any number of the other things that seem very possible. And also that if Harris wins, there is no more loving around and they put the hammer down on these psychos and stop trying to play nice in Congress. This is all terrifying.

Wingnut Ninja posted:The thing that I wonder about, and the reason I think trying to read anything into early voting stats is dumb, is the defection rate. Yeah, I can't tell. The polling data is essentially the same, Kamala getting the same amount of Republicans as Donnie's getting Democrats. But there's anecdotal, reasonable stories showing that a huge R turnout might not be true Rs. For instance, an actually real, not-made-up story from a older woman coworker today. Coworker's husband is at a diner in the more rural side of suburbian trump country, with a family friend or some poo poo and the friend is a 89-year old guy. The 89 year old guy starts talking like the stereotype Kamala's trying to reach: "I've voted for Republicans all my life, but I just can't get there this year and I just don't know what I'm going to do." Conversation continues for a while along these lines... until a rando in the diner jumps across the table and lunges at the old dude. Same coworker describes driving around in a similar rural area, stopped at a red light, and she notices a trump camp to the right. Like fuckin coleman tents and signs and poo poo there with the apparent permission of the farm owner or something. She gets swarmed and surrounded, at the red light, by these trumpers kindly asking how she voted. At a loving red light. Coworker mentions just how insane this all is and how she likes his policies but can't stand his mouth. Normie, dependable Republicans made waffley at a minimum by feral trumpers.

Speaking of Trump and bigly strong women- what the gently caress is Melania going to do after this election, one way or the other? Her invisibility during the campaign indicates she has no desire to help her husband and she probably doesn’t want to be First Lady again, so what will she do if he wins? They’re intimidating to him. He doesn’t like to be challenged by them and, you know, Nikki Haley will call him on his nonsense with reproductive rights and how he sees and treats and talks about women. I mean, he just can’t have her around. It wouldn’t work.” Donnie and co detected that all the air went out of the Biden garbage poo poo, so they decided that this would be the new Thing That Will Win Them The Election and pushed it hard even as it was an obvious nothingburger. Very common thing for secret split households to keep peace. I'll have to ask my precinct chair about the limits on people-per-booth when families come in though, as we generally haven't policed that after they get their ballots.

I forgot something here: the early voting periods. If the stereotypical husband goes to work and a stereotypical wife stays home, said wife can head to an early voting center, come back, and boom, no conflict. Democratic canvassers have reported that sometimes they'll knock on doors expecting a woman and getting met by a man that either tells them to gently caress off or "we don't vote". Having that early voting period can mitigate those really icky situations.
