Bluesky is fine but wondering when they’ll start running ads or if there’s any reason they won’t get bought out by a tech creep who wants their own FB/twitter. Haven’t seen anything about them planning to be a Wikipedia style donation operation.

Bluesky is still in funding stages - they just took in $15MM. However they are starting to talk about revenue streams. Currently, you can buy a custom domain for your Bluesky profile through a partnership with Namecheap that kicks some money back to Bluesky.

Other ideas have been vanity purchases like how you can buy an excessive number of check marks on Tumblr, or quality of life upgrades like playing videos in higher quality.

The developers and CEO are consistently vocal about setting up not just Bluesky but the underlying AT Protocol as being, "billionaire proof."

AreWeDrunkYet posted:

Cugel the Clever posted:

The folks behind Bluesky are pushing two main products: the social media app everyone who doesn't like the Nazi bird site knows and loves and the distributed, open-source protocol that only nerds are aware of or care about. Bluesky is just one access point to the protocol, such that the former's degradation or demise is theoretically meaningless as all the data can theoretically be hosted in a completely decentralized network that other apps can be created for.

Whether this pans out in practice remains to be seen, but it seems conceptually sound.
This sounds a lot like Mastodon. There's multiple examples where the platform and technology are less important than community and moderation for maintaining social media. Even Twitter is (mostly) functional after getting rid of 90% of the workforce, because most of the people they got rid of were the marketing people and moderators that actively drove company/celebrity engagement and created a palatable environment for them to attach their brand.

I am not enough of a social media engineering-knower to understand the minutiae, but from listening to the people that are, there are some fundamental differences between Mastodon/ActivityPub and Bluesky/ATProto (aka the ATmosphere). One of the driving ideas behind ATProto is that you own your data and can take it with you much more easily than you could with Mastodon, and I believe that's been proved out with some internal moves - Bluesky went from being 1 server to an array of servers that are all federated with each other. They're still all Bluesky owned and operated servers, but it proved out the interoperability.

Tldr, since this is the Election thread: Bluesky looks like Twitter but is set up and run by people that learned from both Twitter and Mastodon's mistakes, and also aren't in it for short-term payoff.

today he had 3 rallies, tomorrow he's doing four -- all scheduled four hours apart. his speeches have been rambling on for over an hour these days. there is no way he's making them on time.

After the NASCAR race ended today, my local NBC affiliate had a Trump ad, which seemed more low budget and desperate than anything else he's put out.

He's wearing a suit with a red hat in front of his trademark flags, but it's with different lighting and is encouraging people to vote for him in a manner consistent with someone who realizes his opulent lifestyle is in grave danger if he loses.

I've always suspected that the reason that exit polls seem to be considerably more accurate than earlier polls is that, partisanship aside, people tune out when the result seems to be predetermined. Ergo, it's in the best interests of the media and pollsters to make the race appear neck and neck for as long as possible to keep the punters tuned in.

If the final exit polling is close enough to the end result, they can proudly claim they called the race and point to "a large number of undecided voters" as the reason for the earlier results - conveniently translating to more ad buys from campaigns the next time around!

Last-second cash grab. It's the "dark gold" maga hat that Donnie only started selling last week. Also just so happens to match Proud Boys colors, so may / may not be some dog whistling involved.

I should've guessed it was a cash grab thing before I looked into it, since it made him look like even more poo poo than usual and he was wearing hats for poo poo he wouldn't usually wear hats for. Lately, he's been using "whoa, my hair looks like poo poo, bad hair day lol" as a random crowd applause line when he was in the middle of saying something else.

He randomly started wearing hats to every rally recently and I am going to assume it is because someone showed him a pic of his bald spot and it embarrassed him.

This may or may not be true but it’s the possibility where Trump is suffering the most so it’s canon to me.

The four feet of cotton candy he twirls into a hair-turban have been failing him frequently lately, so I'm on board with this. It's exactly petty enough to be something he would do. Still hasn't stopped him from looking like he's bobbing for turds with that face spackle he uses but I don't think anything will stop him orange-ifying himself at this point. He's pretty committed to that one no matter how ridiculous he makes himself look.
