So I have several coworkers who have confessed to me that they're sitting this election out and not voting. Maybe it's because I'm an immigrant but it really blows my mind that there are people who can, but don't, vote in an American presidential election.

I get that people might not agree with everything a candidate stands for but come on, this is arguably the one election on Planet Earth that actually, truly matters. All the other heavy hitters are autocracies that dgaf about elections.

Some of the election anxiety is seeping in this morning, but I'm buttressed by the abysmal showing from the Trump campaign over the last month. Surely the exhausted clown can't get enough votes in the places he needs them?

There have been sustained and very visible efforts across the political spectrum to encourage people not to vote in US elections. Add the that to a system of governance that is slow to adjust by design, and a lot of people end up feeling like what they do doesn't make a difference and its impossible to keep track of who to vote for anyway .

But you're right, it is really loving stupid to not participate in perhaps the most consequential election for what happens to the world. I think a lot of Americans take democracy and their privilege to participate in it for granted.

I kinda get it. You get two choices, blue or red. One way or another, blue or red will win. You get the power to slightly shift the odds of the red or blue happening as a result of work you and the country have put in for years.

But some simply reject the choice and just have to shoot the kid.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JX_BYT_C6YQ

Generally, I feel these people are idiots, but they're not wrong in that "the system" has given them only two answers to the question. They've decided to reject the premise of the question as a gently caress you to the system.

Incidentally, shooting the kid gives you the worst possible ending :v:

I somehow missed Contrapoints' "Envy" video, but this excerpt popped up in my Bluesky this morning and it speaks to me:

quote:

So the incel Black Pill is just one instance of what I call an "ideology of resentment", a discourse that outwardly appears like moral or political critique, but which on examination is mainly just a resentful moan. The goal of resentment politics is not to improve conditions. In fact, the resentful person is full of contempt for any "morally compromised sellouts" who are trying to enact plausible reforms. They don't want victory, they don't want power, they want to endlessly "critique" power. Because for them, "critique" is an important psychological defense against feeling impotent. Scheler described it this way:

quote:

"It is peculiar to ‘ressentiment criticism’ that it does not seriously desire that its demands be fulfilled. It does not want to cure the evil: the evil is merely a pretext for the criticism."

As a general rule, the more radical a political community claims to be, the more likely it is to be a community of resentment. Self-styled radicals will tell you, "superficial surface reforms do not interest us. The problem must be critiqued at its root". And then the root turns out to be this universal, all-encompassing evil right? Society itself, the system, the machine. A resentment ideologue always imagines himself engaged in a kind of Satanic revolt against an omnipotent, omnipresent enemy.

And nothing short of total revolution counts as any sort of victory whatsoever. "We have to dismantle the entire system! Burn it all down!" I guess it's pedestrian to point out that this is the revolutionary utopian equivalent of Christians awaiting the Last Judgment. Our Kingdom is coming comrades! 😇

Yeah Elon's whole thing is to string a whole lot of bullshit together until it makes contact with either reality (which leads to more manufactured bullshit) or courts (then he loses or changes strategy due to aforementioned bullshit).

Definitely not someone I'd trust my entire swing state turnout operation to in a potentially close election!

Jon Ralston, who basically knows more about Nevada elections than anyone alive, has called his shot. He's yet to miss a presidential race, though has missed downballot races and was probably the first to predict the republicans flipping the Governor's race in 2022. In the context of the Nevada early vote being nearly 70% of the expected turnout, and Republicans clearly up by 4% or so, his prediction:

https://thenevadaindependent.com/article/editor-jon-ralstons-2024-nevada-election-predictions

quote:

----President: I have been calling this The Unicorn Election because of the unusual voting patterns. It’s really hard to know what will happen with mail ballots and Election Day turnout with so many Republicans voting early. But here’s what I do know: Both sides – at least people who understand the data on both sides – believe this will be close. That’s because, if past is prologue in the mail-ballot era (last two cycles), tens of thousands of mail ballots will come in between now and Friday (the deadline). It’s a simple question: Can the Democrats catch up? It’s really a coin flip, and I know people on both sides who have analyzed the data who can’t decide. I have gone back and forth in my own head for days, my eyes glazing over with numbers and models and extrapolations. The key to this election has always been which way the non-major-party voters break because they have become the plurality in the state. They are going to make up 30 percent or so of the electorate and if they swing enough towards Harris, she will win Nevada. I think they will, and I’ll tell you why: Many people assume that with the GOP catching up to the Democrats in voter registration that the automatic voter registration plan pushed by Democrats that auto-registers people as nonpartisans (unless they choose a party) at the DMV had been a failure for the party. But I don’t think so. There are a lot of nonpartisans who are closet Democrats who were purposely registered by Democrat-aligned groups as nonpartisans. The machine knows who they are and will get them to vote. It will be just enough to overcome the Republican lead – along with women motivated by abortion and crossover votes that issue also will cause. I know some may think this reflects my well-known disdain for Trump, heart over data. But that is not so. I have often predicted against my own preferences; history does not lie. I just have a feeling she will catch up here, but I also believe – and please remember this – it will not be clear who won on Election Night here, so block out the nattering nabobs of election denialism. It’s going to be very, very close. Prediction: Harris, 48.5 percent; Trump 48.2 percent; others and None of These Candidates, 3.3 percent.

As Jane Coaston says, the existence of white nationalists imply that white supremacy has failed.

https://x.com/noturtlesoup17/status/1853581615638741361?t=NB2uH_-Ha0XQN62aiT2rTg&s=19

quote:

A white nationalist worked for the Trump campaign in an important position in Pennsylvania for five months — until Friday, when the campaign fired him after learning about his views from my reporting.

Last week, I confirmed that Luke Meyer, the Trump campaign’s 24-year-old regional field director for Western Pennsylvania, goes by the online name Alberto Barbarossa. As Barbarossa, he co-hosts the Alexandria podcast with Richard Spencer, organizer of the 2017 white nationalist Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. On his podcast and others, and in posts online, Barbarossa regularly shares white nationalist views.
---
I received a comment from the Republican Party of Pennsylvania. “The employee in question was background-checked and vetted, but unbeknownst to us was operating separately under a pseudonym. If we’d had any inkling about his hidden and despicable activity he would never have been hired, and the instant we learned of it he was fired. We have no place in our Party or nation for people with such shameful, hateful views.” [note: :jerkbag: ]
---
Meyer isn’t employed with the campaign anymore. But he explained to me in an email how he felt that his white nationalist ideas had already permeated it.

“Like the hydra, you can cut off my head and hold it up for the world to see, but two more will quietly appear and be working in the shadows,” Meyer wrote. “Slating Trump to speak at [Madison Square Garden], putting ‘poisoning the blood’ in his speeches, setting up Odal runes at CPAC, etc. In a few years, one of those groypers [white supremacists] might even quietly bring me back in, with a stern warning for me to ‘be more careful next time.’”
