Turns out taking that Atarax at whatever time it was because I didn't look at the clock was a good move. Whatever happens in the next 4 years to the detriment of the people that voted for him is something they deserve.

My only hope is he follows through with all of his promises as well as he did with building the wall and all 40 miles of it or whatever the hell it was.

Likely doing the same.

In 2000, I was a young, idealistic policy wonk with a fresh PoliSci degree in year 3 of a lefty policy job in DC. Bush happened and I dug in hard and was going to fight the power, man. And I did, personally and professionally. And it did nothing and that motherfucker got elected again in 2004. Still was politically engaged, read multiple newspapers/news magazines/etc. Protested, got out the vote and all that poo poo.

In 2016, I was much less young but bought into the idea that hilldogg had it in the bag, and went to bed shocked and numb. I turned off all of the news save local poo poo and the GiP CE thread for 3 years.

Then COVID happened and a piece of poo poo antimask/vax senate candidate used my kids' school board meeting as a campaign stop. This got me engaged again, and I ended up as a central committee member on my local dem party.

This year, my local dem party, which is entirely run by boomers and entirely ineffective (seriously, there were 10 unopposed republicans for local offices on my ballot yesterday) pul;led out all the stops to keep a group of us progressive types out of leadership, and now the dems have once again collapsed locally and nationally as America votes in a fascist who has promised to do the dumbest poo poo possible and empower the dumbest people possible to do global harm.

So honestly, fuckit. I live in a red state, red county, and red community that went even more red yesterday.

My voice and my vote don't matter. 25 years of being far more engaged than the average person and America is measurably worse in many, many ways.

I think I'm done paying attention.

Really not much anyone can do at this point to stop the poo poo that's going to happen, best shot is to just try to make it through. Hunker down, look after you and yours and try to organize with like minded local community looking to actually help people. All we've got left is each other at this point. The polls have been right for over a year and they said not only was Biden deeply unpopular but so was his platform. Dems got a once in a lifetime chance to dump both but nope that would ruin too many legacies and unemploy too many election experts. Unfortunately this problem isn't just confined to the Beltway. But really, it's looking like the only thing that could have won this was the Dems having assembled a massive media machine 30 years ago that would have countered the absolute brain rot from right-wing media. The poison is now pervasive across demographics.

I think what gets me the most is not that he won, but that he's seemingly going to get the popular vote too. My wife and I were seriously considering moving to Seattle next spring/summer, but now? Well, I have Canadian citizenship, may as well use it. She's wanted to leave this country for years, and has a job that is in demand in Canada and the UK (she got an offer for a job in NZ earlier this year but had to decline because the pay very very low), so, mine as well gently caress off then. I realize every country has it's issues, and Canada is likely going to have it's own reckoning next year, but I'll still take that over this bullshit. gently caress this stupid country.

This happened because Biden is a bad candidate and shouldn't have ran in 2020, and he definitely should have dropped out of running for a second term so a primary could happen.

I don’t think the party itself has what it takes to win. It took a combo of wild factors to eke out a victory against a hugely unpopular president. I’ve said it before, but the left lost the war a long time ago and the minor battles that were won aren’t going to mean poo poo with a Republican trifecta coming in. There is no hope.

Well good news, I don't think there will be another January 6th this time since their guy won. I also don't expect there to be any sort of January 6th event in 2028, but in the bad news way I expect that because the mechanics of government will make sure there's no loss to oppose and any violence will take place before that point, being whatever is necessary to ensure everyone knows that fact good and god drat hard.
