I'm not sure they're going to care this time. Kill the filibuster and go hog wild. The worst that happens is that in 2 years they get voted out, but I wouldn't count on that and even then they'd still have another 2 years of whatever they pass being in place before anything can even begun to be fixed.

In this case, democratic downballot overperformance might save that. 53 republican senators with a tiny house margin is a big difference compared to 57 republicans and a huge house margin. And there are *a lot* of republican senators up in 2026 that may not be willing to rock the boat that far. But the real reason is that most of the poo poo they want doesn't need filibustering. Taxes, executive orders, tariffs, judges, and all that. But it will be funny when the "I voted because inflation is too high" voters get zapped by tariff-induced inflation as soon as those companies burn through their imported stock.

They have what they need, any majority in the senate to stuff as many blatantly partisan outright corrupt 30 year old foot soldiers in to the courts who will agree when they say the rule of law is now "I rule the law". They'll do everything they can get away with within the system, and then keep going. For everything. They're appointing the people who would say no, so they won't say it.

In my continued effort not to doom, I will say I am moderately comforted by the people trump seems to be looking at as far as advisers. Susie Wiles is a more or less mainline republican. Robert Lighthizer loves some tariffs, but mostly because he believes strongly in boosting American manufacturing, which I can agree with, though I am not sure the non-manufacturing costs imposed on society at large by protectionism necessarily are outweighed by a growth in manufacturing jobs. He's also real skeptical that china does anything in good faith, which I can also more or less agree with. The hosed up part about the first round of trump tariffs to me was pissing off a bunch of our allies like Canada and Europe, not so much the idea of more tariffs on chinese imports. Hedge fund guys for treasury, not great, definitely bad for workers and financial regulations but also they aren't gonna want to let the system explode and break down completely. I guess all in all it looks more like the first trump admin, round two but crazier and less competent, and not 'dictatorship on day one' like I had feared. More grift and corruption within the system than wrecking the system entirely. It still absolutely sucks, but I guess it's better than it could be. I'll probably be eating my words when he appoints stephen miller to homeland security or something. Kaiser Schnitzel fucked around with this message at 19:26 on Nov 9, 2024 |

There's a good chance anyone not from a solid red state will be out the door just from historical midterm performance of the President's party anyway. Might as well go with the flow. Trump controls the GOP from the ground up now too. Good luck with your race when they exclusively fund the primary opponent that's fully on board with the plan.

Torrannor posted:When will we know who won the House? A few more days, probably. It's because of the Arizona/Colorado/California races and the pending mail ballots still being counted. Republicans still favored, Democrats not out of it, margins still expected to be close. It's a lot like how the Arizona Senate race still hasn't been called even though Gallego is tremendously favored. Everyone involved is really, really waiting for all the mail ballots to be counted because it's clear the D/R mix doesn't match 2020 (favorably).

Tired of regulatory capture? Enjoy the new escalation: executive branch capture! https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/jd-vance-elon-musk-x-twitter-donald-trump-b2614525.html quote:“So what America should be saying is, if NATO wants us to continue supporting them and NATO wants us to continue to be a good participant in this military alliance, why don’t you respect American values and respect free speech?” Vance asked. “It’s insane that we would support a military alliance if that military alliance isn’t going to be pro-free speech. I think we can do both. But we’ve got to say American power comes with certain strings attached. One of those is respect free speech, especially in our European allies.” "Be nice to our sponsor and noted free speech hypocrite, Apartheid Clyde, or we'll play fuckfuck games with NATO" wasn't something I had in my bingo card. Might as well just flip them the bird and let them do it. Appeasement never works against these people. They'll just threaten to leave NATO for their next pet project eternally until they decide to leave it anyway and pocket all the concessions they're given along the way. The faster the rest of the world moves on from the US the better they will all be.

This actually made me think about it the implications of a cabinet full of billionaires, and I think it's a recipe for dysfunction and chaos-to nobody's surprise, but maybe the republic's benefit. Billionaires aren't famous for cooperating and collaborating, they're all used to being the most important person in the room, and there's a pretty decent chance they all start trying to pursue their own pet projects and agendas and just wind up fighting each other as much as anything. If there was a strong executive in charge of them all, maybe they could wrangle them into a common purpose, but lol @ trump actually doing work. He likes when his underlings fight each other anyway.

You know what this reminds me of? The soviet union under Brezhnev. That was a system where principally all the old organisations and rules were now second and subject to a loosely defined defacto court, orbiting around the leadership. Nothing was certain and anything could be sabotaged by shifting intrigue
