The point is that I don't believe this emerging narrative that, "if only the Democrats had run a hard left candidate they would have won everything."

I don't see an electorate that votes Trump because there's not a progressive enough candidate. I don't think that voter exists in significant way.

If the argument is that there is a vast, untapped, silent lefty majority that doesn't vote due to dissatisfaction, I don't buy that either based on the turn out numbers so far.

My point is that the Democrats are absolute poo poo at explaining their positions, and so the 70% or so of American voters who don't have a Twitter account may not understand the nuances of something like, "defund the police." Instead, they may end up confused or even scared and easy to turn against a party whose stated policy preferences would help them.

I agree that they suck at messaging, but leftist issues like M4A, GND, UBI, etc are incredibly popular among all Americans. People are saying that the Democrats would be more popular if they embraced them, which is hardly a stretch.

Based on the segment of lefty Twitter I read, I don't think your assessment is entirely accurate.

If the claim up thread was just about M4A and drugs, then I retract my criticism. I'm just tired and have been way more plugged into Twitter than normal the last few days so I may be a tad touchy.

It's legitimately hard to know. Right now, the country is full of solid-red voters which are economically liberal, socially conservative, and will ALWAYS let their social conservative side win out if forced to pick a side. That's more or less why Florida went the way it did in Miami-Dade.

Incidentally, it appears that Democrats took majorities of anyone making less than $100k/year (but again, too early to tell). An underrated thing is that a lot of voters, roughly 60%, thought they were better off economically than they were four years ago, then dismissed the pandemic as unpreventable to waive that concern away.

There's even a decent argument that Donnie's fuckup of coronavirus is the only reason he didn't get reelected in a red wave.

I get what you're saying, I just don't think that anyone is seriously arguing that there's a silent socialist majority out there. What there is is a bunch of people who will vote to improve their material conditions, especially when it's disconnected from party baggage. Hence Florida going red but voting for $15 minimum wage.

A lot of the problem imho is that in a lot of Americans' minds, socialism means "what the Democrats are going, but more of it".

Seems reasonable take. Fewer dead Americans, smaller hit to the economy, etc.

I wonder what would have happened had he mailed out free "Trump" masks with the stimulus checks and encouraged his supporters to wear them.

Yea I feel if you ran a platform that if you squinted at it was based on channeling peoples rage against various groups and channeled it towards rich assholes and then in the name of that offered leftist policies without hiding behind means testing (weed, health, taxing the rich, debt clearing) you'd probably steal the redeemable parts of trumps base away from the gop and get some disaffected socialists. No one has called for the democrats to start eating the rich seriously*, dudes is just frustrated that the democrats are tripping over their own dicks to be a more respectable gop than an actual opposition party

Florida also passed felon reenfranchisement in 2018 while rejecting a moderate sitting senator and a progressive gubernatorial candidate

the extremely sad truth is that people while people like Democratic or even socialist policies, they seem to utterly loathe electing people who actually want to carry those policies out.

GA is going to be close enough, like within a few hundred votes, that a recount lawsuit could flip it.

PA's outstanding ballots are trending Biden as they're counted, and projected to have a final margin greater than what a recount could overturn.

Aren’t those mostly accounted for?

My understanding are that nine thousand of them are “outstanding”, which means that the ballots were sent to voters but have been returned as of Thursday. Any of these could arrive on Friday, but the likelihood is that most of them will not. Most probably weren’t even filled out.

Counties with worst virus surges overwhelmingly voted Trump

An Associated Press analysis reveals that in 376 counties with the highest number of new cases per capita, the overwhelming majority — 93% of those counties — went for Trump, a rate above other less severely hit areas.

Thirty-six percent of Trump voters described the pandemic as completely or mostly under control, and another 47% said it was somewhat under control, according to AP VoteCast, a nationwide survey of more than 110,000 voters conducted for the AP by NORC at the University of Chicago. Meanwhile, 82% of Biden voters said the pandemic is not at all under control.
