A year ago, I didn't even know what a pandemic was. In a few months, we'll get a president that doesn't think the whole thing is completely impossible to control and will take concrete steps to do something about it. At worst, maybe the full force of the federal government can improve our pandemic lives some.

And we all can badger the gently caress out of the administration to make serious executive actions.

There is still a ton of work to do to fix things, and it's probably going to get worse.

Having said that, there are a few things that change for the better the minute Biden takes over, like every single one of Trump's cabinet members losing their jobs. Our education system was rough before Trump, but Betsy DeVos waged a war against public schools, and it stops Trump's patriotic education plan dead in its tracks.
Also Biden can reverse every single one of Trump's ghoulish anti-environment EOs. Like the Arctic drilling ones, and selling public land.

People need to stay engaged, and force progressive candidates at the local level, and Trumpism isn't going away anytime soon, so that's going to be a force to fight, Biden isn't the solution, but he is a hell of a lot better than the alternative.

People are doing meaningful things to make local and congressional elections more progressive, meanwhile having Biden in power opens the door to meaningful improvements for people during a crisis even with an obstructionist senate.

There’s plenty to criticize Biden about. Coming in on the day he got elected to lecture people about why they shouldn’t be happy ain’t that.

I hope that’s not the case. The media is already focusing on the fight that will happen there, and it should receive the undivided attention of the DNC for support (for better or for worse). There’s a lot on the line there.

Every man likes a pretty girl with him at a skeleton dance.
I’ve always framed it as a Biden Presidency was going to be largely focused on unwinding the crap that Trump has done. Not just in restoring our relationships, but rebuilding the nation’s soft power and basically bringing the nation back to a place roughly analogous to 2015 or so Obama.

Yes, this is not great, but it is progress from where we are today. I have no illusions that a Biden / Harris admin will defund ICE or anything of the sort. He’s going to be a caretaker ala Ford and hopefully just be a footnote in history largely glossed over when people talk about the last 75 years or whatever.

I’m very keen to hear about his cabinet nominees and who fills State, Justice, Commerce, and Energy.

This had been my concern. You think Trump was bad in the first four? Give him four more years in which he has nothing to play for and he would've been doubly insufferable while also thinking he was invincible and validated by winning reelection.

He'd have been even more convinced he could rule the country Putin-style. Will Biden be any better? We're about to find out, but I've been smiling all day and would rather take my chances with him than a guarantee of another go at Hitler on Training Wheels (bonus points to whoever in this thread used that term).

This has.... given me all sorts of good ideas if I ever have kids. My brothers' kids should be glad I don't live within a thousand miles of them.

Like, getting an 8 year old girl a bunny shaped cake, putting it on a track in the yard and telling them they have to hunt their dessert as it rolls around on an overly elaborate redneck model train rail powered by a bank of 12v marine batteries. Give them a .22 and pack center mass of the cake with rimfire tannerite.

Then give them a little debbie and toot a horn in their face.

Thank you for inspiring this thought, fallom.

I also read your post as jumping into a birthday cake, not party.

It’s a sad day for accelerationism.

If someone was already a No Joe, then that die has been cast since months ago, as the result (outside a death) was always Trump v Biden since April of 2020.

It is sad for those who held real hope for winning control of the senate.

This has been my thought. Biden could have the furthest left platform possible but would still spend most of his time just bringing government back to the status quo from Obama. The damage done has been extensive and will take a lot to rectify. If he is able to accomplish this and maybe some minor reforms he will have overachieved. He needs to rebuild faith in science, the government and the DNC, manage a pandemic, an economy held together by duct tape and a motivated minority party. He can't lose the house in 22 and has to generate enthusiasm for the Democratic platform in 24. That's a huge, difficult list.

I was very disappointed Tuesday but am fairly hopeful now. A more inexperienced politician would probably struggle in these conditions.

The real doom scenario isn't "I hate Biden" as much as it could be this:

2022, midterm performance uncertain or maybe bad (but maybe not, as typically first term presidents have more house/senate power that drives greater backlash?)
2024 maybe Biden loses
2024 Some GOP person is president and not much got fixed in the meantime due to the Senate and then on top of that we could see a return to GOP president plus GOP senate.
2028 Incumbent wins reelection

I mean, the next decade could suck! But that doesn't mean I'll be upset about Trump losing.

Chaos mode: Biden dies between now and inauguration.

Theres no way in hell Biden will run in 2024 imo, he'll be in his 80s if he survives his first term. If they trot his old rear end out there again they would just be handing the election to whatever POS the GOP puts forward. It will probably happen if they put Kamala out there as well.
