Really the best time for Biden to announce that he's dropping out would have been during a televised speech during Trump's speech at the RNC.

That was floated online in places, but turns out Donnie's speech sucked, so best of both worlds!

I mean a lot of newspaper/media prewrites chomped hard on the twenty minutes of prereleased "new tone" until he was back to the 70 minutes of "late, great Hannibal Lecter". The funniest example:

A point I heard was that people who are "undecided" might have tuned in for the new direction part of the speech and left before the reversion to mean.

The fact that Nate Silver has seen this much of Trump and still gave him the benefit of the doubt says all that needs to be said about Nate Silver.

Is anyone else bothered by how the news media keeps stating things as if Biden leaving the ticket is inevitable? If he doesn't–wouldn't these headlines be for nothing? New York Times is especially bad right now, and it's not even a slow news week.

What really gets me is the anticipatory tone, for something not guaranteed at all

It's both very lovely (putting them above Donnie's crazy nonsense), but also very reasonable considering just how much leakproof Bidenworld is leaking and Congressional sources are doing the same. Also notable is that today was a possible counterleak batch of "Biden digging in, very angry at Obama/Pelosi/etc". A self-licking ice cream cone at work for clicks.

Does Mr. Romney support abortion rights? No. Does he want to aggressively raise the minimum wage, bolster public education, strengthen unions, expand transgender rights and enact progressive tax reform? Probably not. But is he a cartoon thug who did nothing but watch TV while the mob he assembled beat and used Tasers on police officers? No. The choice is between Donald Trump and not-Trump, and the not-Trump candidate needs only one qualification: to win enough votes from a cross section of Americans to close off the former president’s Electoral College path back to power.

Part of the wish fulfillment of “The West Wing” was that oratory can be persuasive. So Barack Obama could come forth at the Democratic convention next month in Chicago and remind us, once again, that we’re not red states and blue states but the United States by full-throatedly endorsing his old rival. And Mr. Romney could make the case that the Democrats are putting country before party in ways that the MAGA movement will not, and announce his bipartisan cabinet picks at the convention as well.

Sorkin his own dick indeed, this reads like his Emmy-seeking fantasies playing out in real time.

lol c’mon, at least suggestions of Hillary involve someone who is a democrat. Lifelong not-terminally online/galaxy brained democrats would be confused & upset about why their party has decided to put a republican on the ballot.

West Wing seems to have fallen into ER/NYPD Blue levels of irrelevance, haven’t heard of anyone watching it in at least a decade. At least they spent a ton on the Oval Office set so it was reused in the superior cultural projects of Red Alert 2 & X-Men 2.

The money / donor stuff is absolutely a contributor, but it made the sleepy, braindead joe thing a locked-in impression for the country. Most normie voters thought that was the real Biden from their social media feeds and random conversations, it just became locked in when all the politicians and reporters saw the same thing the normie voters did.

Absolutely true that money talks, but eyes watch too.

And Kamala gets the endorsement!

The thing that creeped me out is here's Biden in late 2022, still fine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x1KbV6MSw0A

Here's 10 months ago when the old is really starting to hit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqYtzBc5xTo

I'd say he was fine until the last year or so, then old hit the accelerator pedal.

Yeah, it baffles me that some people leaned so hard into the concern being a complete fabrication. But whatever. I'm sure they'll back Harris to the hilt since their pushback was, presumably, founded in having the best candidate to beat Trump.

I thought it was weird to push so hard back against it... because now that it's happened there's no doubt it'll swing to overwhelming support of Harris. Vote blue no matter who is a real cancer to the discourse.
