There's arguably a benefit to slow-trickling endorsements over a week, each saying why Kamala rules. I generally vote gently caress it and roll them all out. gently caress it, even have Manchin declare like he's making mouth noises about doing, and him getting 0 endorsements.

I am skeptical that people care much about endorsements on such a high profile race, and I feel like giving the media a "primary" to cover would be highly counterproductive... though I may be overestimating how ready Kamala may be for campaigning as the candidate ASAP.

WASHINGTON, July 21 (Reuters) - All 50 Democratic party state chairs have thrown their weight behind Vice President Kamala Harris to be the party's new presidential nominee, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The chairs held a conference call on Sunday after President Joe Biden announced he was stepping aside as the party's candidate.
There was "full support" in backing Harris to be at the top of the ticket, one source said.

I'll add the caveat that I'm perplexed AOC and Bernie haven't come out with endorsements for Harris yet. Wasn't the main thrust of their argument that Democrats must align on the candidate to defeat Trump, just that they thought Biden was best positioned over an alternative?

AOC in particular called out party elites as trying to circumvent Harris. Surely the best way she can push back on that possibility now is through an immediate endorsement?

the announcement came at noon on a sunday. handwring over someone going a week without saying anything.

That's where I'm a Viking!

I'm actually feeling kinda relieved by this.

My guess is that Biden was ready to hop off the train at some point in the last few weeks as the calls grew louder, but realized how suicidal it would be for the Dems to do the bullshit mini primaries/pageants that donors were floating around, and basically told the party "Unless you have a concrete plan that isn't just someone's west wing fan fic, or get behind Harris, I'm staying put." Which if he did that, I'm really loving glad he held out. Because hearing AOC say a few days ago that you had donors that wanted to just skip past Harris as well so they could have an open convention did not fill me with a lot of confidence at loving all.

That, and how Joe basically kept her sidelined and working on the least photogenic issues during her time as VP.

It’s good that Biden finally dropped out and I hope Harris beats Trump because JFC otherwise but we aren’t out of the woods yet.

In 2008, Joe Biden was just another forgettable old white dude in the C-tier with Chris Dodd and Tom Vilsack and Evan Bayh who drew zero delegates and dropped after one caucus. VP experience can actually matter.

Trump is complaining that Biden's COVID announcement on Friday was fake and, for once, I don't think it's entirely conspiratorial to suspect that it was actually just misdirection to give Biden time to firm things up.

Trump then complains in the next sentence that this somehow makes Biden a threat to democracy. How a president choosing not to run again does this is left to the readers' imagination.

Donald Trump is now the oldest nominee by a major party in any U.S. presidential election.

(This was technically true already because the RNC happened and the DNC hasn’t yet, but now it’s a foregone conclusion that it will remain true.)

If elected, Kama Harris will be only the second U.S. president born after the year 1946.

It would be one thing to say that he was isolating “out of an abundance of caution”, but it’s quite another to have the president’s physician sign multiple letters about his treatment, his condition, and the specific strain of the virus he’s dealing with.

Would hardly be the first time the president's physician was grossly politicized (albeit here benignly). Given how closely they played their cards to their chests, with many top folks only getting clued in a minute before things went public, it's not outlandish

Unexpected bonus to Dems that they get to pick a VP in response to Vance. I don’t think they’ll go galactic brain tactical but it is an opportunity as GOP can’t make candidate changes in response.

Another plus is we won’t see that dark Brandon meme anymore. Clever at first but was getting cringe especially when his team was trying to use it when we wanted to know if he was mentally incapacitated.
