The real motherfucker is how many news organizations use the Real Clear Politics average and just how chuddy *they* are with their decisions on what polls to add and which not too. Fun, confusing stuff!

To some extent, they're mostly all the same, with differing drawbacks and benefits. Kelly is really iffy with Unions, as he didn't endorse the PRO Act until his name hit the shortlist. A lot of this weird Shapiro stuff may be relatively normal for heavily Jewish households, I really don't know. He's already recanted a lot of the edgelordy college stuff, which you know, same. He also has some policy ick on school unions and charter/private schooling.

I do wonder how much of this stuff is trial ballooned, relatively standard public VP vetting. I don't think the media really has a good read on the situation because Kamala has run a much tighter ship in the last few years:

https://x.com/JarrettRenshaw/status/1819490069608353945?t=s82O1RT1AP4-HLiyryjqiA&s=19

I don't think anyone knows who she's going to pick, so the Democratic groups are jockeying to have their voices heard. Like how the UAW is for Walz/Beshear, Pelosi and the hill are for Walz, etc.

I'm not sure Kelly is the best pick as I don't think he's as willing to go on the attack as Walz or Beshear are. I'd say pick one of those two.

Best I got is good-governance type problems with the overall Minnesota government, like COVID money scandals and such.
Seems like small potatoes, like "he isn't a good manager and isn't very transparent" complaints. Also was governor during the George Floyd protests.

Otherwise, his blowhard, progressive, small-towny stuff that can be a bit grating.

I like it a lot.

The two most recent big criticisms of him as governor are around a few high profile cases of fraud with his “Feeding Our Future” program that the state put into place to keep kids fed while schools were locked down during covid and the slow rollout of legal dispensaries for recreational marijuana in the state.

Ohh and he was governor when the George Floyd murder happened and people complain that he didn’t send the national guard in to quell unrest.

Biden really likes Shapiro, but he's basically nailed why I'd almost recommend VP Walz just for the vibes alone:

https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/02/politics/joe-biden-kamala-harris-running-mate-candidates/index.html

quote:

... for some of the president’s advisers, it’s hard to imagine him personally rooting for anyone but Shapiro.

That is, perhaps, anyone other than Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. The most obvious reason? “He’s just a blast,” this adviser said.

In January, Walz was among a group of Democratic elected officials that joined Biden at an infrastructure event in Superior, Wisconsin. The president’s formal remarks were at Earth Rider Brewery – afterwards, the group made their way over to the Cedar Lounge taproom to greet voters, where beers were freely flowing. Walz, the adviser recalled, was having a great time – and it all felt infectious.

“Biden was in the best mood ever,” this adviser chuckled, and they said that, at the time, advisers to the president joked with one another that perhaps the team should find ways to have Walz around Biden more “because he always put him in such a great mood.”

Put the guy in charge of vibes and send him all around the swing states for the whole drat campaign, and the whole drat country if you win.

Edit: I'm also sold on the guy for policy as in this podcast he just sat down for (transcript included). He has a whole thing about why Minnesota specifically didn't means-test free school lunches and went door-to-door to get people filing taxes to take advantage of their state child tax credit.

Edit2: ok one of his book recommendations was Command and Control, I'm fuckin sold

Same. It got worse when my Mom decided crack was better than parenting, and wouldn't fill out the paper work. My school looked the other way, and gave me free lunch anyway. I got very lucky in that way.

There is no good justifiable reason we do not have universal- well, anything besides suffering- free breakfast/lunch. It's a net benefit for everyone involved.

That was exactly the argument he made against Republicans saying "well, you're giving rich kids free lunch!!!!" Or "but you're giving $1750 per kid per year and there's no limit to the amount of kids you can claim so welfare queens benefit!!!!" Means-testing is logically correct, but real-world abysmal the moment you impose any paperwork requirement.

Him and the Democrats just went gently caress it and ditched the free breakfast/lunch means test, because they could, and did their damndest to get non-tax filers to file for the $1750 because they couldn't legally give the credit without a tax return. At least in his version of the retelling!

I'm in a similar boat, though even if he doesn't get the pick, I'd expect him to be all over the place as a surrogate. And he seems to have his head on straight about how to use the "weird" thing - use it against Donnie/JD and politicians, but the rallygoers are basically his family members and hands-off those folks. That's probably where Obama/Hillary went wrong (for electoral purposes, I still think they're terrible people for even supporting Donnie :v: ).

But they won't be able to- that was the whole reason for free lunch to start with. Too many draftees were declared 4f due to malnutrition and related ailments. The DOD today's tends to support universal FL/FB, because we are having the same sorts of problems today.

Yeah 25 years in the national guard, high school teacher and football coach, good midwest Lutheran, seems like a real salt of the earth guy who balances attacks against Harris of WEST COAST LIBERAL!! But turns out he's actually much further to the left than Harris, he just seems like the normal one! Beshear brings alot of those same qualities in terms of 'not a scary minority lady from the Democratic People's Republic of Kalifornia', as did Roy Cooper.

Shapiro is kind of the opposite to me. Actually more centrist than Walz (maybe not Beshear?) but doesn't come off as a normal guy in the way Walz/Beshear do and seems much more like a scary east coast liberal. He really reads 'politician' to me. Even though Beshear is just as much of of a career politician, he plays the normal guy a bit better.

Unfortunately, Kelly doesn't seem like the attack dog type. So you'd probably get a more decorum answer. If he was he'd absolutely be the best pick strategically.
