the whole thing is a mess and produces a fractured experience that is almost completely but not quite totally unlike twitter

every one of these mastodon threads is "oh woe is me, i might pick the wrong server". if you're on the "strong set" of federated servers, aside from the "local" timeline (who the gently caress even uses that?), the experience is almost identical. hackyderm, octodon, mastodon.online/social, hackertown, and many others are so tightly federated that the federated timeline on each is basically the same. even if you're a moron with a single-user instance like me, once you follow someone from each of these servers, the federated timeline is exactly the same

jorts.horse seems decent but they're invite only at the moment, pm me and i can drop you an invite (i think that's a thing i am allowed to do? i see an option for it in my account options). choice of server affects - moderation policy, so if you want to hang out in a place that blocks and bans nazis on sight then you have the option of doing that, unlike twitter - common interests of its users, which affects the sorts of people showing up on the local feed and the federated feed (see below), making it easier to discover interesting people to follow. instead of one timeline there's three timelines - home: people you follow, chronologically. if you follow 100 people and one of them posts as much as the other 99 combined well sucks to be your timeline - local: people on your server, chronologically - federated: everybody (from any server) who is followed by at least one person on your server. in other words all the people that the server follows on its users' behalf. anybody can start a server under their own domain name, then make posts to any other server's users' public timelines, but server operators can also ban your server from interacting with theirs, which is referred to as "defederation".

it is very confusing rn I won't lie I think the most annoying thing for me is that threads with lots of people show all the recipients in the message so it's kind of hard to read and by "lots of people" I mean the other yosposters on it

the fact that this stuff needs to be explained at all is enough of an indication that mastodon isnt for general use. it will never be used as widely as twitter. whether or not that's bad, ok or actually a benefit is entirely up to your personal opinion. someone just needs to create twitter but without the nazis

i thought yesterday that maybe i should set up a mastodon for my animal content but then you guys started explaining mastodon to me and how i don't actually need to care about the core idea of the platform because [some horseshit] and i don't want to do this anymore

Yeah i don't know anything about mastodon but it doesn't feel like you need to know all those details to get started, seems to me that all you have to do is just join one of the good servers
|

tbf if you can't figure out "choose an instance from a list then add everyone in yospos" as a process you probably shouldn't be in yospos seriously though I think the main problem is that the early descriptions of how to join it were loving awful and went straight into "if you want to host your own then <continues for hundreds of words>" one thing that you do have to be a little aware of at first is that because it's federated you can get some delay while data replicates. Iirc it took a few minutes from me signing up to be able to login while that happened.
